Day 15
I had a case sod buster at one time, that I used as a shop knife for dirty little jobs. Son in law used it to clean the crud out of the threads of an axle bolt. Needless to say it wasn't sharp any more but he liked it so I gave it to him.

I found this little Queen # 70 Country Cousin about a month ago & couldn't pass it up. It has a do anything blade shape.

Steve, that barehead was a great snag.

Dean, I couldn't agree more with the benefit of a "drop point" blade on a working knife.  That's exactly why I've come to love my GEC #73 for that purpose.  It's a great all-rounder.

I just did a little "shopping" to find out if Case is currently producing a series of mini trappers with the Wharncliffe, and they are--in a very nice looking sawcut antique bone.

The sad thing is, I realized that the new one is $20 more than what I paid for the one pictured above in 2011.  I've only recently been looking at traditional slipjoints again (thanks to this thread) after not buying any for 4-5 years.  I am shocked by how much the prices have increased in that short period of time, and how much harder it is now to find a good deal on used knives.

My GEC cost more than a Spyderco Paramilitary.
Some knives are workers while some are collector grade works of art.
I want a few Rough Riders.

IMO, there's a fine line between "collector's grade work of art" and "well-built user" in traditional slipjoints.  In my mind, companies like GEC, Queen and Case make mostly users--unless the scales are of an exotic material, or the runs are short and serialized.  Custom knife producers are another story.  A ~30% increase in prices in 5 years for basic patterns seems a bit steep to me, and indicates that something is happening in the market.  Less competition, maybe?

I can't do custom built, so my production traditionals are users.
I try to get the best I can, which for me means not as many.
GEC doesn't make every pattern every year, so that doesn't often work out.
CSC when they were in business, these days it's mostly Queen.
We are lucky that the traditionals have not started using MAPP pricing.
That would end it for me.

Toting the Frontier 4434 Powderhorn Black Delrin Stockman

The Powerhorn Series of the mid 70's - mid 80's were made by Camillus for Imperial Schrade (Albert Baer of Schrade ran the Camillus factory at the time). They were a premium line designed and built to be equal to the Old Timer offerings. They have carbon steel blades and are often overlooked by users and collectors. I've always thought they were aimed at the "booming" number of Black Powder enthusiasts of the 70's and 80's.  J. Russell's re-introduction of the Green River line around the same time was also aimed at that "exploding" market.  (puns intended on both) :D  The wood handled "Double Eagle" line of these knives have SS blades.

Here are some other examples in the collection.

I "hide" mine in a machinist's toolchest, BTW, along with many SAKs and other MTs.

Yeah, I know but I like to post pics.....it's what I do.
