So was MacGyver a product placement strategy?
on: August 18, 2016, 01:42:18 PM
So I have to ask : do we actually know if Victorinox partly financed the production of the MacGyver tv show for product placement ?

Is there reasons to believe they did or did not?

I heard the show did boost their SAK sales but can't find anything on the subject

I don't know about the old MacGyver series, but I suspect there was some product placement. The new series better have SAKs in it or I'm not watching!

He has one in the new behind the scenes promo. He says "I've got the jacket and the  Swiss Army Knife, I guess I'm McGyver , right?" or something close. It just ran on the TV as I was typing.  He's holding a Tinker or Spartan and then uses it in the wheel bay of a jet to cut some wires.

I'm wondering where I can find information on SAK sales boost in the 1980s as MacGyver was broadcast in many countries

I know 9/11 drastically affected their sales but I'm wondering the impact the TV show really had years before

There's a wealth of info on both the old shows and the new ones on www.macgyveronline.com.  They even have a list of SAKs by episode.  Fun bunch of folks there too! :D

The most compelling argument against this is the fact that McGyver occasionally used Wengers. If Victorinox had provided financial support this never would have happened, as the two companies were competitors at the time.

I will say the show greatly influenced *my* knife-buying habits.

Hm, we might give them a call and see if we can get some Plenty Function Manufacturing designs on the show too.
