Which SAK for a gift?
on: August 20, 2016, 11:43:22 AM
I have thought of gifting my older brother a SAK for some time, but I'm having a tough time choosing the right one...

He has no MTs or SAKs that I know of

I think the SAK should have scissors so its either Cellidor or Pioneer X Alox

What would you guys buy for a SAK virgin?

Compact, Huntsman, Swisschamp ... It all depends on your budget and your brother's daily activities. Anyway, you can't go wrong. Everybody likes a SAK.

I vote for an Explorer Plus.  A good compromise size, the inline Phillips is a great tool and the mag glass is an unusual tool that will hopefully surprise and delight the recipient.  And Plus scales are always... a plus.

My first real SAK was a Huntsman, so that is definitely a choice

I got an Explorer later on and have to say I like it a lot

I think Swisschamp would be overkill

I vote for the Explorer (the Plus version if you can find it).

It has just right amount of tools for an urban carry; for someone who doesn't actually cut tree branches or goes fishing in their free time. Also, it's not too big, it can be put in pocket if needed.

I gifted the Explorers to my dad and brother as their first SAK/multitool and they were very pleased with their Explorers. At first they were really "reserving" them for fine tasks. You know, they were like "Oooh, it's a genuine Swiss SAK! It's shiny! It's precise! It just oozes quality! I better keep it in pristine condition... Cutting onion or some dirty rope with my SAK? You gotta be kidding me!"  But eventually I persuaded them to use them without hesitation, since they are tools at the end of the day.

Now they keep their Explorers in their cars or their bags. They do not carry them regularly on person as I do. That's why I suggested the consideration of a Tinker or a Compact, a 2 layer SAK is definitely pocket friendly.

This may seem odd, but I am assuming your brother is some sort of office worker or he would already have some sort of multi-tool or SAK.  As a result I suggest a 58mm tool like the Classic.  I carry a Classic on my key ring and use it for opening boxes and similar tasks.  The larger the knife or tool, the more likely it will get left in a drawer instead of carried and used.  If you do go for a 91mm tool, keep it to fewer layer for the same reason.

As a general gift and first SAK I have given an engraved Cadet which always seems to go over well. But if the recipient has specific activities and hobbies they enjoy, then I of course try to find one with a more specialized tool set relevant to said activities.

Every single SAK i gifted to someone (city people) where 58mm (either classicSD -any limited series-, or Rambler)
My first SAK (that i got as a gift when i was young[er]) was a Compact which was a great first step in the SAK world
But i was already into knives!

For people already using knives daily, then a 91mm is a good idea,
For people never having any knife in their pocket before, then a 58 or 74mm is the max then would carry

At first educate people using small SAKs with scissors, and a few years later, they will be ready for bigger babies :climber:)

Say Heah Aleph,  If your brother enjoys camping,  hiking, and bush crafting,  What I got for myself was the Victorinox Delemont Collection Ranger #78, with the Phillips,  The #79 has a Corkscrew which also can be used to untangle Paracord,  The Farmer's smaller,  The blade on the Delemont Collection is pretty long at almost 5", The Farmer is smaller,  For a guy that enjoys the out of doors,  A saw a blade and a awl are almost indispensable.

 I hope he loves it

I would have gone for the Pioneer X just because it a seemingly more durable/robust product.

After I got wed, I offered my best man a Swisstool Spirit in a leather holster because I wanted it to last for a long time.

But that was a very special occasion

Much better than an Compact.
An Explorer is a fun Sak as well as a useful one!

That gives you time to get some Stayglow scales for it.   :pok:

Or maybe some Plus scales with the pen and add the eyeglass screwdriver and pin.  :tu:

I'm sorry to have to do this but................That's what she said. (I'm just adding this before pfrsantos arrives with his massive meme, Oh, no, here it goes again!)

The Explorer is such a fun SAK - plenty of good times to be had with the mag glass. Stay strong 'til October my friend.  :salute:

@Aleph78 - Good choice, Explorer is an excellent gift!  :tu:

However, as folks have already correctly pointed out here: people who are not used to carrying knives in their "EDC" really tend to keep their 91mm SAKs at home / in car / in a bag.

If you want to make sure your brother carries some sort of knife everyday on person, you might consider also buying a Classic (or Rambler) too... Especially if your brother's birthday is in October. Victorinox Classic is not that expensive (cca. 10€), plus, when paired with an Explorer - it's an excellent combo, offering flexibility to carry whatever knife he needs on different days.

That combo is exactly what I gave as a gift to my brother. First I bought him the Explorer, he liked it very much but he decided from the start to keep it in his car. Few weeks later, I gave him a Classic too, so he can carry at least a small knife on his keychain every day.
