The Rambler is a wonderful step up from the Classic. :tu:

Apart from the Phillips, you'll like that the scissors and blade both open away from the keyring.

What's the reason for the change in orientation?

Cos it's sensible! IMO. :D

Seriously, the spring setup allows it. On the Classic, which has a single layer, the blade and nail file are the same width as the scissors and have to open in the opposite direction. A choice having to be made, it seems to me that Vic decided the scissors were the tool likely to be used the most and thus should open away from the keyring. With the Rambler and its close relatives the combo tool and scissors are the same width, so they can share a spring and form one layer. The blade and nail file which also share the same width, likewise.

Such is my reckoning, anyway.
Rambler

I saw that last night, as always with him very amusing loved the explanation why…Have just ordered myself an ambassador, think those larger (than my normal keychain manager) scissors will be a great accompaniment to my 84mm’s

Thats because Felix is a very smart man. He knows how much knife/tool is needed in real everyday life in most urban/suburban surrounding. For most people, a 58mm SAK is good for 99% of what you will need for most things.
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

I still have my three amigos - MiniChamp, Rambler and my late wife's SD Classic.

The Classic is in the archive box, partly for sentimental reasons, but mainly because I simply cannot get past the extra functionality offered by the other two.

The Rambler is my clear favourite of them all, but I pack the MiniChamp when I feel like a change. It's always got the tweezers onboard, and its toothpick has a permanent place in my wallet.

I got a MiniChamp last year... before I knew there was a Midnight version.   :ahhh   I rationalized that I had used the tweezers more than an LED light in recent years  So it's fine.  :wait:

Back in the early 90's, I got a Wenger Esquire. It felt like the perfect size pocket knife to actually carry always. Now that it's irreplaceable, it's my bathroom nail cleaner, etc. I recently got a Victorinox Executive 81 to fill the Esquire's shoes. It's great. Only thing is, I'm going to have to file the key ring off. Why does Victorinox think the ring should be in the way of the blade on some of these little guys? I've heard the "we use the scissors more..." explanation, but to me, it still makes little sense.

Anyway, I really like this knife. It reminds me of a younger time, when I wanted a knife that didn't bulge out my pocket... and I did just fine with that Esquire for quite a while.

For some reason, I quite literally cringe any time someone says they file the keyring off.

That said, I wonder if it might be what chews holes in my pockets.

I've never done it before, but my Esquire is done right, and I think I want this to feel the same. I'd rather it was on the other end, and I could keep it there. I like them. Still deciding.

Simply find a Companion, which is the same as your Executive, but w/o keyring  ;)

Executive 81, not Executive. It’s the Victorinox version of Wenger’s Esquire.

As I use LED light, but also toothpick and tweezers, I modded my Minichamp scales to suit these requirements

I'm glad you did. I've been thinking of the Executive 81 / Wenger model lately.

It looks to me like the main blade of the 81 is taller and more bellied than the Classic, which seems to generally be the case for Wenger models. What do you think of the blades?

Sometimes I wish these smaller blades had more height and thickness for their length to make them feel more sturdy (even if that means making them a little bit shorter).

This has been my gripe with them ... they're half the depth of the handle, whereas medium sized SAKs are almost as deep as the handle.
