Opinions needed please?
on: September 17, 2008, 10:36:50 PM
I do a lot of woodswalking with my boy, and now the weather's turning for the worse (or better in my case :)), I'm thinking of packing a little hatchet/tomahawk for emergencies ie weather closing in, and a fire/shelter being needed :)

Now I've got a little Gerber Backaxe which is fine (still want the little knife that goes in it ::)), but I wouldn't mind something a bit different, and something I can love :D, sooo I'm looking at one of these...
http://www.heinnie.com/lr6ilY703037/Knives/American-Tomahawk/American-Tomahawk-Lagana/p-92-417-2854/

I really like them, have seen quite a few demo's of it being thrown, and driven over :o, but not real world camp stuff :-\, now I'm pretty sold on the materials used in this, but I'm no Tomahawk expert, the only prior Tomahawk experience I've had came from a CS Riflemans hawk, which to be honest was pretty crap till I reprofilled the cutting face and rehandled it :(

So you advice is needed fella's :)

I'd go with a Cold Steel tomahawk (in any flavor)...

Yes, it requires some work, but it's a fun project and a useful tool. :D

Very light, cheap, and versatile.

Though I didn't have to rehandle it, from what I've heard most people haven't had to either, it comes with some pretty good stock. =|

And I put convex edges on all my axes, so...

EDIT: And somehow I view the VTAC as more of a weapon than a camp tool. :-[

Apart for the Vietnam one, there all a bit big :-\, the smaller the better, as it needs to stay out of site in my rucksack till it's needed ;)

What CS Hawk have you got then mate :)

I've a trailhawk and a norse. And a lot of people cut the handles down to whatever length they prefer.

I have a Norse hawk and like it, but if your main concern is cutting a lot of wood in a hurry I would suggest looking at some of the Eastwing hatchets and the Kershaw 2550 folding saw. 90%+ of my hurricane cleanup work was done with the Kershaw, an Ontario 22inch D-guard machete and an Eastwing Camp Axe (the larger, 2/3 size axe with the blue rubber handle). I tried the Norse ?Hawk and my C/S Kukri machete, but their edges were really too thick and required a lot more effort to use.

At my office four trustees took turns using my Kershaw saw to cut up the two trees that fell in our parking lot during hurricane Gustav, including some branches 6-7 inches in diameter. In one day they pretty much had everything done.

I kinda got to chime in here, since I actually own a Vietnam Thawk. I actually do like mine however it is very limited in the practical uses that you would have in the bush. The blade is designed to primarily cut into soft tissue, and bone. Not hardwood, and you will find that it will hang up on wood so that after every other stroke you really have to wrench it free.

However I also have pet peeve over the fiskers and the gerber axes. Yes they are strong, however they really are hard to control, and also very hard on the elbows with the shock. I know that Those companies claim that shock is kept at a minimal, and just like the suspension I wish you to try a side by side with like hatchets.

So I feel wood is the best answer, Now for heads. Unfortunatly most companies use a forging method that is not as structuraly sound as the old hammer and anvil. tjhey really dont have a ton in carbon, which makes a sharper blade from repeated firings. And the heads on the axes really are not as good as the old ones.

So what I would do is go to a Flea market, or yard sale and find an old hatchet head that is rusted and beat to hell (less than 5 bucks). Take it home clean it sharpen it and re haft it in wood(10 bucks).

By the way someone most likely will say that wood is too suseptible to the weather. However. I have two gentlemen that have seen a 1950S head that was rehafted 3 years ago and sealed properly. It resides in the stump at my camp and has been rained on constantly. The wood is grey, but still tight and straight.

Thanks for that John

I did think they might be a bit limited at splitting due to the size of the eye relative to the taper of the blade, but I didn't know they were prone to sticking :-\

Food for thought
