Drool worthy thread!

Just a quick question guys: if you could only own ONE Case pocket knife, what pattern will you choose?

Can we have other non trad knives too or just case?
It's just that I'm thinking of buying a $40 (max budget) Case knife as a representative of the American tradition pocket knife and would like to know the preference here if you can only own one

Gotcha. I think the most classic and all inclusive design in my opinion would be either the small stockman or congress. I prefer my trad knives to be smaller personally, but i think a Case stockman in any size is pretty American

There are really so many designs though you cant go wrong. If its a Case then any model will be good in my opinion. I am a huge fan of the peanut and toothpick models. The Trapper has been around for a long time and I have one, but the design just isn't quite as appealing as others to me.

If you want the "american" look i would definitely have the main blade be a clip point though

I think it would be the Sodbustern Jr or Barlow.  Probably a Barlow

Thanks, guys. I initially planned on getting a Toothpick, and then found out its not really as American as the others. The Stockman does seem to be it, but I want something with at most two blades only, a big and a small one, like a jack knife. There are just quite a few classic pattern out there that one can't go wrong whatever one chooses.

Good thing Sway Backs are $60+ so its out of my options, but that one is really a cool design  :tu: :tu: :tu:

My first Case was a black handled Sodbuster JR, and I paid $30 for it, although you can probably buy them online for less. You can't go wrong with them, they're wonderfully simple, and won't ever fail

I already asked my sister to buy me a Case which I found for $30. It's not a true bone and not really traditional but it looks like a Tony Bose design Sway Back. Can't wait to get it weeks from now

Here are a few from my accumulation of knives. I don't collect knives by brand but rather by what happens to,"trip my trigger" at the moment.Case knives are nice but there are many others out there of equal quality. That being said here are four of my favorites:
First up is a 5165 folding hunter that likely dates from the 1920's. It could be earlier but the tang stamp was unreadable due to the knife sitting in water for a number of years. It took about a month just to free the blade using PB Blaster. Cleaning it up and putting a decent edge on it was a challenge as well. Two things about it that are unique are the arrow style shield and the bail that looks to have been factory installed. The immersion in water turned the stag handles a beautiful dark brown(probably caused by rust).
The second one is an un-numbered Case Tested XX letter opener with an unusual coffin shaped handle. I have been unsuccessful in finding out the original pattern number as it is not featured in any of the reference books I have checked.Have talked with several knowledgeable Case collectors and they have no knowledge of it either.
Third is a 3172 folding hunter that was given to me as partial payment for appraising a collection. The celluloid handles have deteriorated pretty badly(but haven't out-gassed)and I was going to replace them but decided to leave it as is. When the new owner takes possession of it(after I'm gone)they can do what they like with it.
The last one I scored on e-Bay that was advertised as a letter opener along with two hunting knives.A Case V-42 dagger in unsharpened condition but missing the leather washer handle and the point on the pommel.Originally made for the SFFS commandos in 1942-43 they are very collectible today. One in mint condition could fetch as much as $6,000 or more. I paid $18 for mine and was offered $900 in it's as is condition.

My sister just sent me pictures of the Case Carhartt I ordered from her. I'll finally get this this weekend when they arrive here. I must admit I expected more curves from the handle, like the Sway Back. I hope i will like this better in person :)
