Well, what can I say?  What a perfectly wonderful night that was.  To start I have to say that the book festival is exceptionally well organised, the staff helpful and friendly despite this being the last night of a hectic four weeks of work.  We were promptly let in and while I grabbed a couple of good seats my friend went to the bar and picked up a couple of pints of IPA for us to enjoy while we listened.  The stage was set as an interview and a full house were treated to a well conducted and intelligent question and answer session between Magnus Linklater and Ray.  Questions ranged from the specific; how do you keep your feet from freezing after getting dunked in Arctic waters?  To the more thoughtful; is there a commonality of attitude in the indigenous peoples of the boreal region?  All questions were answered in the thoughtful and concise way anyone who has seen Ray on TV might come to expect.  Throughout the hour long session Ray's depth of knowledge and enthusiasm shone though.  The only question he dodged was; what's your favourite location in Scotland?  When I briefly chatted to him at the signing I did point out that he'd not actually answered that one, he chuckled and said that some things are a secret for a reason.  Fair enough I suppose, but you can't blame a chap for asking. :D

I'm also very happy, and a little smug, to say that last night's audience were the very first members of the public who had the chance to buy the new book.  The shelves were cleared in very short order I can tell you.

The only blurry picture ever taken on my phone's camera. ::)  Cleaned up as best I can.

Seems like really good fun.

Note: I think you need to go back to film -digital photography is just  not for you   :)

I bet that was a great evening Gareth  :tu:

My question to him would have been "Could you take Bear Grylls in a fight"?

:D
I used to come here a lot.

Given Ray's reputation as a Judoka then I'd put my money on him.  As one of the audience put it "Grylls for show, Mears for the pro". :D

I think Bear can take Ray any time, any place

we need to organise a facebook/twiter movement/campaign asking/pushing for this fight to happen.

I was meeting other friends for food in the pub afterwards and I don't carry large pointy things in that environment, so I just had my minichamp on my keys.

I've obviously not had a chance to do more than skim though it, but it does seem to be his most comprehensive skills book to date. 8)
