Day 26...

My Ambassador helped to trim my eyebrows.  No picture of that, so this will have to do...

26. Going with the OC Settler, this is going to be challenging.  :ahhh

The Settler is a good companion knife, but my dedicated tools will definitely see some use today.  :salute:

Day 22:
(Attempting it ALL single layer!)

Yesterday, the recently arrived Prince was polished, cleaned and lubed. Today it has the honors. Went to find a large serving fork when I was carving the Cornish hen and couldn't find one, nor could I find any large serving spoon or a ladle. I've little doubt where they are and I'll never see them again. Snagged these while grocery shopping (Meijer, a regional store chain similar to Target), and they're quite large, but robust and serviceable which is what matters most. The price was right too. Unfortunately they're imprisoned to very heavy cardboard hang tags by large zip ties that cannot be broken by twisting the utensils. Out comes the Prince to perform the Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.

Recalling The Wedge is one of the Six Classical Simple Machines, I first attempt to use it double, by slipping it under the zip tie with its spine against the hang tag, using the height of the blade as a wedge to force its cutting edge, another wedge, to cut the tie.

This works, but not very well, as the spine of the blade digs into the cardboard. The cutting edge wedge is being forced to cut the entire width of the zip tie all at once. Using the cutting edge as a wedge against the side of the zip tie should require much less force to cut it. The following may be disturbing to Medical Bill, but the Danger Club living life on the precipice is no stranger to the hazards here.

This works much better and by using just enough force, it glides gently through the zip tie without impacting and wedging apart the dermal layers of flesh on my thumb. The remaining zip ties are quickly cleaved and I declare a victory for the Victorinox Prince.

While doing the photos I discovered a thumbnail needed a bit of touch-up. The unique file on the Prince does the job quickly.

The Prince is a nice one and its major feature is the file. With the Ambassador and its scissors I can understand why the Prince was discontinued. Too bad they couldn't have found a way to put this file on the multi-layer Executive as it's much nicer with this side slotted and a very fine cross-cut on the other side.

John

Thanks John, I'm with your single layer method today actually. It's not easy to carry a basic jack knife for me anymore, old cross or not. I think it's making me older and crosser...  ;)

I live at 7,000 feet above sea level,  and found out the hard way when I moved here,  that you can't just peel open a yogurt the conventional way.  If you do,  you will get sprayed  with projectile yogurt.

What's the solution? The Classic,  of course!

Poking a small hole in the lid depressurizes the container so it can be safely peeled back.

I can't tell you how many times I've seen people here with yogurt all over their face (along with a victimized look).

Nice!  I'd like to remove the can opener on my Centurian and replace it with that straight Phillips driver!  Then add a hook underneath where the current Phillips driver is.

I'd thought about doing this conversion myself to create a Yeoman Plus from an Explorer Plus, and give the resulting Climber to a deserving friend, but it's on a back burner indefinitely as I'm well satisfied with the Explorer Plus for now. They're the two logical models to start with.

You don't need an Explorer Plus to create a Yeoman Plus, the Compact already has all the Plus bits, just an ordinary Explorer is needed

Day 26

Today I though I should say a few words about my least used tool on the Soldier, the screwdriver. It's not often you see large flat screws these days and especially with such a thin slot. I am actually thinking that this may well be the only tool here meant* to serve multiple purposes. The slim edge together with the fact that the SwissTools comes with prybars/crate openers makes me think this is the intended use here as well.

*The can opener works surprisingly well for lifting caps but I don't think that was intentional.

I think so too 42, I use them for prying, levering and scraping quite a lot. The ones I like best are on the Spirit and the locking 111 version, but neither is as heavy duty as the old Soldier knife.
