First electrician of the challenge, I think. Such an awesome pocket knife. :salute: I was going to carry a Waiter tomorrow, but I think I'll have to join you with an Electrician too.

Sleeping in the car never seemed so possible!

Day 12 - I can barely remember what a SAK with more than 2 layers looks like. What are 'back tools'?

Day 08:
(Attempting it ALL single layer!)

More lawn mower maintenance as I may not be able to mow today with wet grass from rainfall. Depending on how wet, I might be able to get to it this evening. In the meantime I need to replace the spark plug with the one that's in the mower specifications. The typical single cylinder Briggs & Stratton plug is an RJ19LM (LM = Lawn Mower) and that's what I've been running in it recently as that's what I could get quickly for it at the local hardware store. However, the owner's manual calls out an RJ19HX which is nearly identical except it has a slightly smaller diameter center conductor, supposedly runs slightly hotter, will foul less, and allows easier/faster engine starting in the Briggs & Stratton "Ready Start" single cylinder. Mine starts OK but not instantly like it did with the old "HX" plug.

Finally got an "HX" plug andd need to install it, but one should always set the gap before doing so, even if it's allegedly preset when it's made. Shipping, handling, including the dudes stocking the shelves in the stores, and customers handling them on the shelf looking for the correct plug can mysteriously change the gap set at the factory. I have a gapping tool, somewhere, but couldn't find it. Problem is it's small and in one of the shallow workbench drawers with oodles of wrenches, vise grips and pliers.

A SAK flat tip driver has a shallow wedge shape. It might be used as an improvised gapping tool if it could be calibrated as to how far it should be inserted into the plug gap. Unlike the AWOL gapping gauge, A SAK and calipers were immediately at hand.

On top is the Victorinox Apprentice. Below it is a Wenger EvoGrip 64, their equivalent of an Apprentice. It's sad Victorinox didn't carry this one or the Evolution 63 (equivalent of a Waiter) past the the 2013 rebranding and model consolidation. In looking at the two this morning, I like the Wenger Combo Tool profile as it has the pointed protrusion that should do perfectly in setting a plug gap, if it's thin enough on the tip. Enter the calipers to calibrate how far to insert the pointed tip of the Wenger combo tool . . .

If you look carefully, these calipers are like most that have a knurled set screw to lock the calipers at a specific gap. I set them up at .030 inches and locked them using the set screw. Wow, what a nice surprise. This is better than hoped for! If barely inserted into the plug gap so that the tip just covers the center electrode, it can create and verify a .030 gap with its slight wedge shape. Now for the plug to set and verify its gap.

Bob's your Uncle! Plug gap set and ready for installation in the lawn mower engine. I know I'll find the gap gauge eventually when I stir things around looking for a metric box wrench some time (it's the drawer where I store all the metric wrenches and ratchet sockets).

The Wenger EvoGrip 64 combo tool comes through to tackle the job. As a footnote, the wire stripper/bender won't fit to tweak the gap. If it's too large, a light rap on a piece of soft wood will narrow the gap slightly. The wedged profile of the combo tool can widen it if necessary.

The Wenger EvoGrip 64 is a rare bird. You won't find them easily. Mine came from a guy in the Ukraine selling them BNIB as New Old Stock (aka NOS). The only ones I've seen available were in Eastern Europe, Ukraine, Russia and other former USSR states.

Works great on bottles. Haven't tried opening a can with it yet but undoubtedly will before the end of the month and I suspect it may be easier to use than the Vic combo. Flat-tip use is about the same as the Vic's.

Thanks,
John
