Thanks Mags, yours too!  :like:

Those appear to be chestnuts, but they could also be polished road apples, I'm going to assume the former.

They are Horse Chestnuts or as we call them here, Conkers. In Autumn we play a game where, (using the mighty awl), you make a hole through the conker and thread it on a length of string. Two foes face each other and take turns to smash their opponents conker. The victor's conker then 'levels up' to a higher number (say from a sixer to a sevener) depending on how many victories it has under its belt.

It's what passes for entertainment here in Blighty.

Sounds like a fun game! I'm a big fan of all things autumn, a great time of year.  :)

Road apples are also horse related, a term from horse and buggy days...

Day 13:
(Attempting it ALL single layer!)

Breakfast time and wanted a mandarin orange with the bagel. Decided to try an experiment with the Wenger combo tool on the Evolution 63 to peel the mandarin.

The corkscrew, toothpick, tweezers and keyring don't seem to be very suitable, although a creative imagination might come up with something for the corkscrew. Too early in the morning for that; haven't had my first dose of java yet. Two possible strategies come to mind, the first using the pointed protrusion on the combo opener, similar to the orange peeler found on the Vic Ramber, albeit not all that sharp. Started the spiral with it in the photo above, and continued with it in the next photo.

Leaves a ragged cut, and controlling depth requires some care, but it's working, and allowing the the hook on the rear of the opener to slide along the skin helps steady it. The other strategy I thought of is choking up on the blade with my thumb and using it to set a cutting depth into the orange peel.

That method works pretty well, although some care must be taken when spiraling around the mandarin. It can slip out rather easily and if the tip of the knife blade nicks a finger on the other hand holding the mandarin, it could bring breakfast to a screeching halt for a few minutes to clean up the carnage.

A MiniChamp or Executive may be convenient to peeling an mandarin, but it's not essential. Both methods I tried worked just fine, although the combo opener left a ragged cut. Unless the spiraled peel is being used for fancy special food decoration, it doesn't matter.

Note:
No apples, whether tree grown or found on the road, were harmed in the making of these photos.

We still see them occasionally on the roads around the Amish farms, but they're very good about using manure bags, so it's not a common sight. They're to be avoided when riding a bicycle.  :)

Day 17:

Bantam for the office today:

(Image removed from quote.)

Bantam?

It's what you get when you forget to take it out of your pocket and it goes through the laundry.
Just a random rambling thought.

At least it is clean now.

Day 17/30
I used the Executive for some fingernail maintenance,  but was a little too ambitious,  thus requiring a band aid/plaster.  It was tough to type accurately,  so the Classic was used to trim the corners.  I'm typing with confidence now.
