Spinning Tops
on: September 08, 2016, 02:18:59 PM
I followed an ad on this site to a company called Forever Spin a few weeks ago, and ended up buying a brass spinning top.

Since then I've added the Titanium top and their spinning base and watched a few Youtube videos and I think I may be hooked, lol.

It appears that tops are now considered EDC items and there are a number of people making them for considerable sums of money! I'm staying (relatively) cheap so far and have just placed an order for one of these:

http://www.vorsospin.com/collections/vorso-mk1

I wondered if anyone else on here is into tops at all. As a total novice I'd be up for any tips or advice on what's worth buying and general "EDC Top" chatter :D

I used to come here a lot.

I like those, they look more engineered than the other ones. I might just have to treat myself to one

At those prices I wouldn't, plus every single one is showing as discontinued. There's only a few EDC items showing for sale as well, everything else has discontinued on it as also.

Ah yeah - I figured that out. He reckons he'll never go back to an old design, so he only brings out new variations / designs and when they're gone they're gone. You have to watch the Facebook group and his Youtube channel for a heads up on release dates apparently. They are proper works of art though - gorgeous.

The speed at which they sell out reminds me an awful lot of Peter Atwood's tools a while back - snapped up the moment they go on sale.

The Vorso top I linked to in the OP are made in Staffordshire btw - which is a nice bonus :)

I clocked 3 minutes 35s on the brass Forever Spin top last night btw (only been over 3 minutes 3 times so far lol).

I stumbled across these guys making tops too. Not much info about on them, but they look nice: http://www.jllawsonco.com/collections/in-stock

Getting over 10 minutes per spin just about every time now - it's ace! The precision in this thing is simply marvellous - so, so precisely weighted.....

I take it you are referring to this one? :D

Simple gaming toys made expensive with high tech or exotic materials have been a part of the EDC world for a while.  Dice have been quite common, especially in titanium, aluminum, brass and copper.  Yo-yo's are another one that you see crop up from time to time.  Tops are pretty sweet too!

I'll admit, I have looked at these a time or two (or ten!) but I've yet to pull the trigger on them.

So far anyway....

Found some cheapish ones here - followed a trail Youtube, then Facebook. He makes these on a manual lathe, but they look nice and are cheap : http://www.ebay.com/usr/bradfordmetalworks

Bit of a lead time but cheap as chips :P

I got lucky the other night and managed to bag a Vorso Flat Top, before they sold out in like 2 minutes. It reminded me a bit of the frenzy when Peter Atwood used to release a new tool - absolute online carnage and bitterness as people missed out lol.

http://www.vorsospin.com/collections/flat-top/products/flat-top-v1-brass-9mm-ceramic-hybrid

I figured if I don't like it I could sell it on very quickly and easily - but I have a feeling I'll use it a lot as a knife/tool flicking fidget toy substitute. We shall see!

My current best spin time for the Mk1 stands at 11m 35s now :D

You are absolutely correct in saying productivity is shot!

Still, they are beautiful!

But I think I'll save my money until the next phenomenon, which I believe will be a tungsten, brass and carbon fiber version of ball in a cup!

You know resistance is futile :D

Based on what I've learned - the Vorso Mk1 is what I should have started with. They spin for 10 minutes easily and are available off the shelf unlike most of the better tops out there it seems which have waiting lists. The Forever Spin tops are nice and easily available, but they aren't in the same league as the Vorso when it comes to performance.

Also, a concave lens / mirror as a spin base is necessary if you want to get good spin times.
