Wallet carry?
on: September 15, 2016, 01:51:43 PM
I didn't want to derail this thread, but a metal wallet might not be such a bad idea for those of us (like me, unfortunately) that put their wallet in their back pocket.  While you are young these things may not mean as much, but as you get older (and trust me, it happens earlier than you expect it will!  :pok:) sitting with a wallet on one side all of the time will lead to back and hip problems.

As such, a metal wallet might not be a bad plan as it may be uncomfortable enough in your back pocket to make you find somewhere else to carry it.  Luckily in the summer I tend to wear shorts most of the time, and all of my shorts are cargo shorts.  In the winter I wear jeans a lot, so there aren't a lot of options, but I did get in the habit of carrying my wallet in my laptop bag, since it goes (almost) everywhere with me.

Of course, I also do wear cargo pants, so then my wallet goes in a thigh pocket just like when I'm wearing cargo shorts.

Just food for thought anyway- and if you have back or hip problems, try carrying your wallet somewhere else and see if that makes a difference.

I switched to the front pocket for my wallet years ago.

With a SAK, my keys and a phone in my front pockets there isn't really space for a wallet unfortunately.

I've been carrying my wallet in my back right pocket as long as I've had a wallet, and it feels weird not having it there when I reach for it, but I really feel the difference when I do have it there.  I feel lopsided and it makes me wonder how much my hips have been tilted every time I sat down over the past three decades.

My chiropractor is the one who recommended that I switch to the front pocket. It did take a little while to get used to it but now it feels odd to put it in my back pocket. I don't carry a phone but if I did my left pocket is empty usually. Right pocket is wallet and a SAK on a hanger. I carry my keys on a carabiner on my belt loop behind my leatherman sheath.

I've been a front pocket wallet user since I've carried my first velcro wallet.  It always felt odd to me to have my wallet in my back pocket when it was natural ( to me ) to easily reach into my front.

My keys are on a carabiner as well, then the dangling keys go into my pocket.  That way if the carabiner fails I still have my keys.  Also, it keeps them from jingling.

When I'm at work driving or in equipment, I put my wallet in my lunch box. No way that gets out of my sight! I know some people carry a knife in a back pocket. Don't think I can do that one.

I feel like a wallet is too thick for a front pocket. It seems like it would look and feel weird (as I'm sure the opposite does for others).

And wait, you don't carry a phone?!  :o

Yeah I can't carry a knife or multi in my back pocket either.

I was a back right pocket guy until I stated carrying a bandanna in 2009. The wallet moved to back left, and the bandana went into the back right. Got tired of sitting on the wallet, so moved it to front left about two years ago . Couldn't be happier.

I Have been seeing the metal wallets around. Just figured they were mostly for the identity theft protection. They just seem like they would be best carried in a purse, bag, or shall I dare say.... Fanny-pack......
I dont see myself delving into the metal wallet realm yet. I like the look and feel of a leather wallet.  Especially because my Grandpa calls his a BILLFOLD. Thats awesome :D

I've never carried anything in my back pockets for more than a few minutes, simply to easy for somebody to grab and run, especially a wallet......

As long as I'm standing or walking I'll put my phone in a back pocket to free up a hand for a few minutes, but that's it.

Using back pockets would explain how you guys manage to EDC so much......

I can not understand how carrying anything in your back-pocket would allow you to sit comfortably.  Maybe you all have skinny behinds :)

The only things I ever put in back pockets are my wallet (which I am finding more and more uncomfortable) and poop bags for the dogs.  I'd say they are only there for dog walks but i often forget they are there and end up doing everything with poop bags flowing in the wind behind me.   :ahhh

I don't think I could tolerate a phone, waller or multitool back there and a metal wallet seems totally out of question, at least for me and at least for back pocket carry.

I myself have never really liked the idea of a metal or otherwise "hard" wallet. It just looks too weird for a wallet. Or I'm too old-fashioned :D As for hard materials, with the same success I'd put my cash, cards and coins in a random plastic box and carry them around.

One alternative is to wear 5.11 Taclite Pro pants or shorts.  The back pocket is wide enough that you can slide the wallet to the side a little bit so you aren't actually sitting on it.  As someone who has suffered from repeated episodes of debilitating back spasms, I'm acutely aware of all of the tricks of the trade.  I also carry a super thin wallet from Big Skinny, and remove all unnecessary cards. The real solution is Dr. John Sarno's book Healing Back Pain, but that's for another thread.

Made myself an all kangaroo leather wallet of 2.4mm to 3.2mm thick. Each layer measures 0.8mm thick. I used this leather cause its thin and extremely strong. You don't even know its in your back pocket. Even if you sit on it.

According to studies, Kangaroo leather is lighter and stronger than the hide of a cow or goat. It has 10 times the tensile strength of cowhide and is 50% stronger than cow and goatskin.
The strongest leather known to mankind is stingray. But its very expensive. Was going to use this but maybe next time.

Well, you should make that your job and get another hobby. Unless you already work at something you like and are good at.

Haha. I Like both. The hobby and the job. Took awhile to get the correct dimensions and layout. This is only my 3rd wallet I made and a few in the rubbish bin. Tolerance is crucial and even 1mm out both ways and the cards would not fit or fall out!!
Seen your paper design. Have you made one yet??

I can't stand nickels either. They are a huge coin with little to no value.  A few years ago we gave up the penny since it was so worthless, and I can't wait until the nickel goes too.

Same in every country. Used to be good when you could go to the shop an get 49 sweets for 50c. Correct me if I'm wrong. But Nowadays there's nothing under a dollar.

But some people still want the coin pouch on their wallets. They obviously don't carry it in their back pocket.
