Catch up Day 8

Went back to the Becker Necker Number 11, it's becoming a favorite. Used the spine to throw sparks with the fire starter from Harbor Freight.

Broke down a lot of boxes for recycling today.  Gave the blade a quick hone after that card board cutting and it was good to go for more.

Buck Paklite Cape w/ the Hide. It's a smidge longer. I prefer the Hide as a general EDC for the meatier blade.

Before joining MTo, mail addressed to a generic recipient was merely a nuisance.

It's not as big a nuisance now, as it presents opportunities for challenge photos. :D It's even better when the mailpiece in question is not your typical plain bond paper. Expect to see more of this glossy, thick stock as the challenge progresses.

Day 10

Pacu's story on acquiring the most excellent BK-11 reminded me of how I got this Explorer Tanto.  It was around 1990, and I was on a road trip, heading about 10 hours north to St. Augustine Florida for a long weekend of celebrating the history of the longest continuously occupied settlement in North America with my reenactment group.  I was dressed as a trapper, and the rest of the group were pre-revolution British Redcoats, and we had been invited to what they call the Grand Illumination. It's called that because each evening ends with a candlelight parade around the historic district.  Anyway, I realized about an hour from home that I had forgotten to drop a knife in my pocket and it wasn't worth turning around.  When we got to St. Augustine, we set up camp and went to an apothecary to buy some sunscreen and mosquito repellent.  The apothecary was like an old timey Woolworth's with a lunch counter and everything a tourist could need, including... a display case full of knives.  I was looking for something different that would remind me of the trip.  Everything was the typical, "gas station folders" except for a few fixed blade knives.  The counter guy said he was dying to get rid of the Explorer Tanto and offered it to me at the clearance price of $10.  It appeared solid enough so I said I would take it.  When he opened the cabinet, he discovered he actually had 2 of them and offered me both for $15.  I needed a knife, but I didn't need two knives, so I declined.  Been kicking myself for that for the last 35 years.  The Explorer Tanto thus became my first EDC fixie, as it was in my possibles bag all day while dressed out, and on my belt when we went out for the evening in regular clothes, for the entire 3 nights and 4 days.  The 440 stainless doesn't hold an edge, but I've beat the hell out of this knife, and it doesn't show any abuse.  Pictured here with the SOG Powerpint.

I really like this, it is on the cusp of being too big as a neck knife, and regretting getting it for years....it was between this and the Fallniven WM1

I've got the photos on the PC, but kinda forgot to post them here...

Butcher knife, thin blade version.

Made by my great-Granddad during the Depression. Handles--walnut with copper pins. Blade--said to be an old crosscut saw.

Day 6:

Opened up this year's Lowe's/Kobalt Christmas pliers set.

Like last year you get copies of the 125mm Cobra and 150mm Pliers Wrench, but they've added a 6" Twin Grip clone as well.

NOT Knipex quality, but cheap enough to buy bulk and use without fearing breaking or losing an expensive tool.

Been meaning on trying Workpro's 100 and 125mm Cobra clones as well. Thinking the 100mm will be great for farm work due to the tether hole for the lanyard.

Fiskars Puukko.

Guessing '60s or '70s era--you don't see them nearly as much as the fillets. 4" and 5" blade models were made--mine is the 5". Got it cheap as the seller listed it as the fillet.

Day 10

I really liked the size of the Tonife and it's cheap enough at $20 that I'm not afraid to beat on it if I need to.  I had to hone it once in these past 10 days but I did cut through a lot of card board.

I picked up a new friend to help out with this challenge.  It's a brand called Huaao.  At $25, I don't mind beating up on it either.  It's longer, thicker, and heavier than the Tonife  The clip looks sturdier and I'm really digging the micarta scales.  We'll see how it fares these next 10 days.

Sorry, FX, I cannot. It came in a big ol' variety bag from the river site. PM me and I can track down the listing.

Day 10

Carried and used the Razel to cut some fabric. No use pic. Still a great knife. Be careful with your thumb on the top, that's not jimping!

Cardboard can dull a blade quickly, which is why it is nice to have an easily sharpened blade.

Day 10
The Essential cut up some left over steak grizzle and fat as topper for Fisher’s food

I love this little knife.  It is such a great size and cutter.  Skeleton handled knives, like the ATK are so easy to carry, but not nearly as comfortable to use. I can see some people not like this one as a heavy user because of the lack of guard, choil or jimping; but thankfully that has not been a problem in my use.
