There are so many factors to consider (some previously mentioned):  aesthetics, pocket feel, hand feel, fidget factor, size & weight, planned activities, anticipated cutting tasks, odds of loss or damage, ease and cost of replacement, weather conditions, anticipated duration of carry, clothing, sentimental value, speed/convenience, odds of being asked to borrow a knife, how it complements and or duplicates other items being carried…

Thank you Nate!

I think you are like me,  and  you confirmed my process.  I over think it!!!

My solution, slipped the old worn, beautiful yellow Sod Buster into the safe, requires me to get on my old worn knees, open the safe, and find the knife, then close it up.
For now it is easier to select another fancy sharp!😎💙🌹
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

Just arrived, a CAMILLUS MODEL 69, said to be Dark Red Bone.

It is dirty. So some tender care and polish will be in store.

This knife definitely appears to have been carried. Used and sharpened during it life.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Steve bird dogged this  listing, pointed. And I took a shot.

It will be a nice addition to the few other Camillus models I own.   :hatsoff: Steve

  I am so conflicted…

I have several pocket knives that are useful and practical as well pretty to look at, yet every day for the past several days I always, and I mean always I pass over those others and slip this old stained blade Sod Buster into my pocket!!!

I sharp edge, was enhanced at a recent knife show, it cuts paper silently now, and imagine it could slice through finger bone if I slipped and not careful.

How does one chose Yellow  Synthetic over, burnt Amber Bone, or Purple Barnboard, or even a Caribbean  Blue scale knife of the same model. OR, a 3 blade Stockman, or my beloved tribal locks., or a GEC hand made knife.

I am bewildered by this auto selection process my brain handles this daily task.

Input welcomed☺️

SERIOUSLY!!!

Strange isn't it?  One would think the GEC would go directly into pocket without hesitation?  Or the pretty colored Case bone options?

Could be the work you had to do to get it to where it is today?  The work is time, effort, and hopes it could be a good knife.  The outcome was very pleasing to you and its performance was as well.  This is much different that purchasing a new knife and touching up an edge or wiping some excess oil from it.

While the new knives are "prettier" to look at and the more expensive ones are very nice overall this Sodbuster came with character.  It came with a whole life and while unknown to you it certainly had one.

Thats one thought I had.

I like to carry my older ones as well.  Like Steve I tend to carry two and tbh three at times.

@ Aloha - a new perspective!  So true, the work applied, was not work, but a need to care for and do respect to a neglected tool.
Yes, it is easy to select, if something goes afoul, it is an old tool…

But, then when I do extract from the pocket and its slip,  there is a confidence that it will function as needed, it will tolerate any abuse, as it is a survivor!  It has experience and has done it awl before, taken for granted by previous owner(s), but not any longer. It will be cleaned and put away cleaned and oiled.
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

And, now, another story that arrived Monday, the Camillus 69.

There was an older knife that I received, grimy and gritty, and the blades seemed off on close inspection.

First task, prepared for a soak in hot water bath with Dawn Blue.   After about 8 hours the truth is revealed, the blades had been coated with a Silver inked marker.!
They were pitted with dry blood stained, the steel stained and rough.  A knife was used, but not cared for and then cosmetic al enhanced to sell🙄

Late last night. I removed from the now brownish tinted water, applied a stiff brush to the liners and internals of the back springs, wiped the blades dry and allowed the knife to dry after rinsing with clean water.

This morning, after my coffee, I applied 600 grit Emory paper to the blades, one side at a time, 6 sides total, till my fingers were black with metal dust, and each surface was now smooth and have some luster restored.  Quality steel was revealed.

Then polished the scales and bolsters, a color depth was revealed, not the red bone as described by the seller, but a rich rusty brown bone with smooth bark texture.

Oiled the pivots, wiped the blades of access polish compound and  examined.

Thoughts!?!

I am impressed by the liners, a fine filigree pattern is present on the top and lower sides of the liners.  Care was taken assembling this tool to indicate it was a level above the typical norm…😉
And yes, I missed taking pictures of the blades before applying the 600 grit😩

The received pictures are a few posts earlier.

Great work restoring a quality piece that had a tough life before it came to you!

I am, however, disgusted that someone would stoop to coloring the blades with a silver marker…

I have never heard of anyone doing this, its pretty dishonest.  These sellers have no clue that many of us knife enthusiast are happy to refurbish a knife so there is no need to do such things.

I am not holding judgement against the seller. He may have acquire at an estate sale or other venue . And it was done prior.
The price was BitN, low, to be honest, I jumped in saying it was worth the gamble.

When I placed in the dawn blue bath and inspected a couple hours later, the actual condition was revealed.

Fortunately a little extra friction cleaned up the steel.  The grime removed from inside the handles indicated this pocket knife like saw actions cleaning rabbits or small birds by its owner and set for some time before be put up for sale.

I am pleased with the results and I am glad for the experience.

Steve bird dogged this purchase, and just threw it into the bag and checked out.    All is good!

Great job cleaning up that old Camillus. I too am shocked someone would use a silver marker to disguise the blades   :o

Still it's a great knife and you got it for a great price IMO
