The "Never used an awl" club
on: September 22, 2016, 08:25:03 PM
Just realised, I don't think I've used an awl. Ever.

There may have been a time when I was 8 years old when I used one for drilling conkers. Conkers being a serious sport for us knock-kneed 8 year olds. But since then....
(scratches head.)

Nope. Never.
This probably explains why the Pioneer doesn't excite me much. A quarter of the tools are useless!

Great pic  :tu:

Unfortunately I don't qualify for membership of this club.

I was just scratching my head while thinking if I ever used the awl, when I realised it was an awl with which I was scratching my head.

I used a 91mm awl to make an additional hole in a leather belt,
and my SI awl to carve a big circular hole in a "thin" (a little more 1mm) plastic sheet

So i can't apply to this club

Nope, can not join either, used an awl the first time this past Monday morning to poke a hole in drywall to insert a screw anchor to mount a replacement lamp.

I was close to using a Phillips but a awl did a better job.

Oh, oh, any awl? Or just a SAK awl?

The one I used was a LM Rebar awl...

I knew from the outset this would be a very exclusive club. Pretty sure Scarlett Johansson has never used an awl. Ditto Jennifer Lawrence and Charlize Theron.
So that's four so far...

Still an exclusive club.
Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Lawrence and Charlize Theron were all over last night using an awl as a skewer to eat appetizers.   :D

Never used an awl?!  :sa: ... But... It's... you know... an awl!  :ahhh

(Yes, I like having an awl.  :D I have used it for anything from drilling an inspection hole in a wall to rip open shrink wrapped plastic.)

actually I have it on good authority that Scarlett Johansson did use an awl

Use them once every couple years. Usually has a pokey bit to probe something, never for their intended purpose. Last used the back side awl on a Tinker to poke an unscrewed screw that was sticking to something. Don't recall what. Blade didn't fit. Poked the awl through the hole, pressed down a bit, screw popped out.

I've enjoyed using awl/reamer (yes as a reamer), IL awl, and wenger awl. But one thing Ive never used is the sewing eye. Seems like it would leave a frankenstein-esque or native-american-moccasins-esque stitch, very crude and best suited for thick hides.
