I'm going through a kink of mostly reading essays ATM since I can't seem to focus on fiction. I might take you up on the offer once it's over. At an average reading rate of 30min before bedtime and some books laying there for almost ten years I figure you'll have the time lend the book to the whole world before it reaches my hand, though  :-\

What is it about? Some tunnels, I read? Any pointy awls involved in that, by any chance?

It's loosely based on William Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck, 5th Duke of Portland who built tunnels beneath his manor and wouldn't engage anyone face to face. The book has a large section devoted to the Dukes attempts to trepan himself. Although it's a gory subject I find the whole history of trepanning fascinating.

Let's dig back into the topic of awls a bit more. Awls, and the holes they sometimes have.

Firiki, how do you feel about awls? Can you share some of your experiences with the awl, sometimes also referred to as the reamer, or are you a member of this "Never used an awl"-club ?

Nope, certainly not a member. I prefer the Pioneer line's awl and the Spirit's best.

I use the awl instead of the blade tip to open boxes or scrape something off something else or simply bore a hole to something for some reason. In just the last year, I've started pilot holes for screws with it, bore drain holes in flower pots and the baby's bath tub, made an improvised bucket using some hard wire and made a sort of sieve to separate gravel from soil.

It's a weird thing, the awl.

It appears quite sharp when you use it to scrape something off. So some time ago I thought to myself: if this thing is so sharp, maybe I can use the awl as a letter opener instead of the main blade. But I ended up with an envelope that was completely ripped apart, and the content of the envelope wasn't in any better shape. Using the awl as a letter opener turned out to be not a very good plan, despite how sharp it may be.

I also read that it can be used to crack a coconut. Does anyone here have experience with that? I'm a little affraid that when I slam the awl into a coconut I either cut off my pinkie finger, or worse: chip off that thin sharp tip of the awl?

I agree and sharpening it once it's banged up is also kinda weird, esp. the backmounted one. The chisel grind is misleading, it makes one believe it can be used as a knife but it actually can't be a substitute for one unless it is about making a quick, short cut on something. The awl's tip is invawluable though! No idea about coconuts but I am very careful to take my time when using the awl. Doing so helps prevent accidents and breakages ;)
