The main thing I use the awl for is when working with threads. Derailing them - it's an excellent tool for that purpose.

I count Zero in the 'Never Used an Awl' Club. Even the OP (Thunderpants) thinks they've used an awl in the past.

Now that I think about it, I believe we used long metal skewers back in the Conker Wars (1980-81). Though some of the posh kids may have had penknives, I wasn't one of them...

I've just checked and everyone in the "Never used an awl" club also happens to be in the "I buy Trousers that Fit!" club. Leading me to conclude most people only use an awl when their trousers start falling down and they need a new hole in their belt...

Nope, I've only ever done that with a knife. I didn't have the luxury of possessing an awl back then.

I gotta say I don't think I've ever used a 91 or smaller awl, but then I got my first 93 and became addicted, it's been so usefull I can't believe it! So I guess I don't fall into this category..
