Canvas Needles.
on: October 03, 2016, 06:10:10 PM
We all have gear break down or that could use a quick sew up.  We also have gear than just need tweaking yet requires a stronger needle and thread.  I had looked for sail needles but I really wasn't sure what the heck those were.  I was in wallyworld and found Plastic/Canvas Needles and Yarn needles which I thought would work and for less than $2 a pack, why not try?

My leather sheath I showed you all began to come apart.  The stitching began to pull away so I figured lets give these needles a try.  I didn't have any string thread so I gutted 550 cord and used the inner strand.  Worked like a charm and my sheath is back in business.  I need some serious work on my stitching tho.  I figure when its time to re-stitch I'll pay closer attention to looks.

The needles are "blunted" at the tips tho I don't exactly know why.  Its a good thing for what I'll need them for.

Anyway thought I'd pass this along.

The needles are pretty stout.  The "eyes" are large enough to allow larger dia. thread to pass easily.  In a pinch one could rustle up "thread" to get by until a more suitable solution.

All needles are metal.  Not sure if I read the packaging wrong of the package is saying the needles are also good for plastic

Not bad, for a first try. Have a look on this, I think it'll improve your work.

I clearly missed some holes when I was stitching.

You should see my mended shirts

Get some waxed thread from a shoemaker/shoe repair shop. It's easier to use, because it "sticks" to the leather. Just a couple of feet will do for that sheath.

I will, this mend should hold up pretty well as the inner strand of the 550 cord has help up on another project I mended.  I used a straightened fish hook on that project as my needle.

I have used waxed dental floss for a repair on leather. It has lasted now for several years without fraying or needing replacement.

Good idea. Like the mint flavoured one. Got slight green tan to it.
