I have/had a geological/rock hammer.  Wear goggles or safety specs if you go smashing rocks in the wild.   8)  It's easy for splinters of rock to fly off in all directions and hit you in the eye...   :ahhh

I've got a post in the outdoor forum of my two old sledges and 4lb lump hammer

Diggy, Bangy things:

Been on a bit of a tool restoration kick of late, mucking around with Axes in the Axe Hole, but have some other striking tools that need some work.

Here's an unknown brand mattock, Cyclone 10lb Sledge, and Hytest Forged Tools 7lb Sledge





The Hytest Sledge handle was loose, I'd tried soaking with some Linseed oil but the wood was too far gone and split up



Bit of a shame, as the handle was quite nice otherwise



Here's a little Birkinshaw Lump Hammer. I thought they'd miss spelled Birkenshaw but now I'm sure it was the maker, not the place, though the maker's stamp isn't clear. I got a new handle for it but it probably just needs a bit more wedging to tighten it up




I still need to re-handle the 7lb Hytest

Prybars and Exhumers

The green Great Neck wrecking bar was bent when I bought it at a yard sale for a dollar. The two nail pullers on the left are Dead On Exhumers.  They have a built in bottle opener.

This Crow bar, and the other tools for that matter, are special. They are all made of bronze. I used to work on some scales and weighing equipment and a couple of my customers were in the printing business. I had to have non-sparking tools to work on the scale decks in the ink rooms. New these 3 tools average $250-300 each. 24" crow bar and 12" adjustable wrench and channel lock pliers. Some where I have a couple screw drivers and a set of Allen wrenches in bronze also. Dan

Belknap Hardware BG47-13 claw hammer (guessing 13 ounce). Originally was my great-granddad's.  Belknap Hardware was a firm in Louisville Kentucky that went out of business in 1986, and was also pretty well known for knives (in fact, Bluegrass Cutlery has the John Primble/Belknap name and is still making knives (in CHINA) with that name). The head is painted gold. Don't know if the head came that way, or it was done later to prevent rusting.

Pittsburgh PRO  24 ounce framing hammer. I think it's one piece, but I'm not sure. Surprisingly well made for a $12 hammer from Harbor Freight. I don't use it much, preferring the old Belknap or my Vaughan 24 ounce hammer simply because I prefer USA made tools.  This is my "I know you're an idiot who will break my good tools, so here's this" hammer.

I always wanted an Estwing, having only ever had cheap hammers that I have inherited. There is a combo with a pry bar that I have often seen for about the same price as just the hammer.

Well I came across this combo on clearance for cheap the other day and decided it try it rather than wait until I could afford an Estwing. I thought you can't go wrong with Made In USA, right?



But when I unwrapped it and had a better look I could see why it was on clearance.

I didn't know that... I think we just call them pry bars; wrecking bars are bigger and curved in a half circle at one end and crow bars are long straight heavy things (according to us).

For us a crowbar's a jimmy, but a jimmy's not a wrecking bar, but a wrecking bar is a crowbar... but not a punch bar...

I've had the rest, now it's time I tried the best. Actually I already have, and decided I could do without no longer. Most of my friends have Estwings as their primary hammer, and if I'm working with them, I tend to not even bother going to get my hammer, and borrow their Estwing.

Recently ordered a 20 oz. Estwing on a whim, but not really, as I'd been looking at them at Lowe's for like forever; but then COVID hit. Last hammer this size I will probably buy. Need a few smaller ones....  Anyone know why Estwing isn't painted on the handle? Accident or cost-cutting? Just like the axes now have nylon, instead of leather scabbards?
