Adding a pocket clip to a sak ?
on: October 11, 2016, 12:52:20 PM
I have a few pocket clips I've pulled off cheap knives along with the screws how hard is it to add one to an alox or cellidor sak??

For an Alox you will have to drill and tap the scale, but for a Cellidor one I dont think there's a good solution.

I did this with a modified Sentinel clip on a Nomad with OH blade :

Paperstone is used as Alox but drilling the tempered clip was difficult. It needs carbide bits.

You can drill celidor and put a backing plate in the scale. You can also use some 3m super tape if the clip is large enough. Nite ize makes one.

I'm not sure I'd want to pocket clip anything with more than 2 layers, pocket dangling thicker SAKs from a Tec P7 clip seems to be more discrete and comfortable.

I do find that suspension clips make even the Swisschamp pocketable and very comfortable for me :tu:

I would like to find a good regular clip solution for SAKs as well though

I only ended up going down that road because I couldn't get hold of any reasonably-priced deep carry clips here though.

If you already have clips, drilling and tapping the scales is the way to go.  For alox that means disassembling the knife.  Easier for celidor, just remove the scale, but as Steve said you'd need some sort of backing in the scale to get a secure hold.  Filling the back of the scale with "Quik Steel" type epoxy putty might be an option, they say it can be drilled and tapped when cured.

No need to disassemble Alox for clips. A drill bit and 2 taps is all you need. A regular tap to start the threads and a bottom tap to finish it off ;).

I tried that once but never got the threads deep enough and the strength just wasnt there to hold the clip as it should so I just decided not to do it again.  Plus plug taps scare me, Ive broke too many.

I have a couple of clips which I got for fitting on 91 or 85mm SAKs, but haven't done it yet. I've looked at it a couple of times, but can't decide which would be the best (or least worst  :P) place for it to go, and still feel comfortable when using all the functions of the knife
