Leatherman Fakes
on: October 22, 2016, 06:05:46 PM
Do we have a "fake" thread? If not, why not?  :D I do not encourage buying fakes. Buying fakes not only encourages the counterfeiters being bolder with their act, buon fakes t also potential bring harm to yourself. Also think of the money not spending on fakes as saving toward buying real ones  :tu:

Anyway, my first entry is for the fake Mako Ti I happened to come across today. It is interesting that it seems these are made in the Philippines instead of the usual China. Is this perhaps the reason the Philippines wants to cut tie with the US and gets cozy with China?  >:D

Check these out:

Interestingly, these guys seem to agree with each other of about $3.60 shipped. I wonder if those bits are 6mm or 1/4"

I think this is a real thread.

That was the question, right?

I bought a couple of those, knowing full well they were fakes.
Mainly just wanted to have a look at it.
Disappointing that there is no screwdriver blade/prybar tip/semi-sharp box opener "blade".

Actually I haven't even bothered opening one yet.

Surprising how detailed the packaging is, Average Joe wouldn't pick that it's not a genuine LM product.

Oh wow, I thought they only made counterfeits with the tool profile, but they even used the name and packaging of LM too? Somewhere oversea, these tools are probably on the shelf posing as genuine products.

I started this thread for all LM fakes. I have seen a few Juice ones. The Mako Ti just happened to be there when I browsed eBay.

Yes the packaging is identical to real LM blister cards, complete with the made in/Oregon pride logo.  It is a true counterfeit.
Complete pics including packing and tool comparisons are in the two links above.

I am sure there are some unbranded fakes out there too that dont have "LM" pack and markings. The "brewz" in my comparison has more wrong than right to even imagine it as a counterfeit. It came in just a plain white paper box wraped in plastic, no logos on tool or packing.

I've seen a ton of the Juice fakes on ebay. They tend to also sell them in bulk.

Here's a blue example;

At a glance it's very convincing.

All the Juice fakes I've handled have been either smaller or larger than genuine article.  Has anyone seen one that is the same size ?

Here's a nice fake tread..
In the picture with the two treads, the right one is fake. It has a double latch on the lock.
At first it look fine, but it feels less solid, scews a loose. It looks like a copy made with a mold from a genuine tread.
Also there's a slight color difference.

This actually looked incredibly interesting. Other than the 2 blades that's not so correct, other parts seems to be in order. Wonder if this is something like that was offered to the Danish Market for no oho, or some one did a replacement for the blade. Really interesting. There should be some history to it. I would offer to take it if the price is right.

Edit- on closer look, the blades looks to be authentic. An OG wave's outside tools are not the easiest to fabricate and quite sure no one will take the time to do it. Seriously I would take it up. If he buys it and does not like it, I would be very glad to buy it off his hands.

Apart from the thumb-studded blades that I’ve never seen, looks OG. Definitely something to look into.

(Edit: Humayd, if you’re ever in Joburg, happy to link up to check this out. I have an original Wave to compare it to).

Thanks guys.
If my friend declines the wave,I'll post it here.

Thank you for the offer Max.
My OG wave (and my son's) was sent for a spa treatment a week ago.

It'd be a real collector's piece of they hadn't drilled for thumb studs. It is a good tool to use now. :)

Here's a fake Squirt P4 I came across the other day. It was in a pile of stuff on an EBay auction and I thought I was getting a deal it since I don't mind surface wear/dirt. Unfortunately, fake.

Almost identical pliers, shape, size, etc. I noticed the file on this one had a serrated blade edge which is what got me looking and then saw both the blade and pliers were missing the Leatherman logo. Knife actually sharpened up alright (better than any other Chinese knife I've had) and the pliers work identical to the real deal so I may throw it in with the fishing gear since those knives always seem to go missing eventually anyways. But figured I'd share a comparison between the fake and a real one I had laying around. See attachments!
