ADD Package Opener
on: October 26, 2016, 02:57:16 PM
I'm in favor of having a specialty blade with my assortment of tools that I carry, either in bag or on person.  These specialty blades, for me, would include items like a v-cutter or package opener.  As far as I know, the Wingman is the only LM that has a specialty blade, aside from the Charge that adds a hook blade on the back of the serrated knife.  I currently carry a Rebar on my hip, and think I've seen others replace the lanyard ring with different tool.  My question, what tools can I fit the standard package opener in with simple replacement and minimal modding to the too itself?  Are there any other options, like a stand alone hook blade that can be swapped in?  And I think the answer is no, but is the package opener, or other specialty blade, available for purchase by itself?

You can check with Loki-mobile in the trade forums about parts.  He's had most of what I've been after before.

I can check tonight about the pivot sizes of a Wingman vs. a Rebar, but at the very least, you would need to add a locking notch to the package opener to have it lock open in the Rebar.

Oh, that's good info.  The lock should be easy enough to handle.  I wouldn't want to get into changing geometry too much.  Thanks

It's really easy to sharpen the tip of the can opener and turn it into a effective package opener. I did this on my Rebar.

The pivot size is the same on the Rebar and the Wingman.

Thought so, but I wanted to be sure.  :tu:

I followed with Steves example and just sharpened the can opener  You not only get to keep the can opener but if sharpened at the right angle is a very effective package opener :o :like:

If you do decide to just swap in a package opener then I also recommend loki-mobile for parts :tu:

Fair enough.  Sounds like the overwhelming majority says to sharpen the can opener (which I assume still offers the original ability).  What's the preferred method?  I'm thinking a dremel with a grinding wheel attachment?  Sand paper finish?

Just a hand file, then diamond stone. It won't take more than 30 mins.
