Wenger VIP Rose Edition
on: November 01, 2016, 10:13:28 AM
Hello People.

I'm new to this forum and found this useful site/forum from various cool threads regarding multi tools and also SAKs as well.  :D

The Story:
I just picked up this beauty at a big flea market last sunday. The seller was an older lady, who sold the knife to me for 25 DKR = 3,68 USD = 3,36 EUR, which is very cheap  :o
I think the older lady did not know what the Wenger knife is worth and had priced it originally at 30 DKR = 4,41 USD = 4,03 EUR, but i manged to get the price a little down.  :)

I'm not an expert in knives and SAK's, but i think this is an uncommon size and version of a Wenger knife. I believe it's a VIP model, which according to SAKwiki is the only 75 mm knife, that Wenger produced from 1976-1990s

The Condition of the knife:
The scales looks in an overall good condition when compairing it to it's age. It looks like it have aged just fine with alle the small scratches on them. The tools are all stainless steel, but there are some very little small rust stains on them, but nothing serious.
The blade is a little dull and probably needs to be sharpened and also the knife could use some cleaning and new multitool oil.

The Tools of the knife:
The knife has a long blade, a nail file, scissors and a tweezers but no toothpick and keychain ring.

The Conclusion:
I'm very happy to have bought it at a very attractive price when compairing to prices on Ebay, as for Ebay the prices can be very expensive. I'm not sure about what year this VIP Rose Edition is from, but i believe it's probably from the 70s.
This SAK does not have a keychain and is small enough for the little watch pocket in my jeans.
Maybe some of you guys can identify the year from the stamp on the blade.
The stamp on the blade is:
Wenger (crossbow)
Delémont
Switzerland
Stainless

Welcome to :MTO: !

Rust: polish the blades with a rag and some polishing paste (dirt cheap at your local DIY)

Scales: to remove scratches you can use a rag and some special polish like "Displex" or watch crystal polish.
A fine polish paste from a DIY store does this too, but the "shine" may fade.

Be sure NOT to rub over the logo/drawing.

General cleaning: use some handsoap and an old toothbrush. (This might remove surface rust too!)
Let it dry and oil the pivots with some mineral oil.
Open and close all tools untill it runs smooth again.

Just my little contribution, other may have better ideas.

Thank you Mechanickal for the cleaning instructions

Should i remove the scales, in order for cleaning the tools or is that not necessary?

The tools does work alright with opening and closing, but i think it could be much smoother and better after new insert of mineral oil.
Best regards

I don't think you should remove the scales for cleaning. If they were transparent and there was visible dirt in there, maybe, but otherwise why bother?

Thanks. Ok then no need for removing those scales. Also i would probably be nervous about breaking them, if i were to take them apart from this special SAK. :tu:

Chance of breaking the scales is indeed way to high and not needed in this clean-up.

Only remove the scales if replacement scales are easy to find (which is NOT the case here) and when you absolutely need to.

Cleaning with the toothbrush and soap should be a serious transformation to start with.

I did it a few weeks ago on a vintage Victorinox Mountaineer.
It went from "gross" to "like-new" within 2 minutes of cleaning.

The risk is probably not worth it.

What is your opinion on removing rust stains and trying to remove scratches from the scales?

Great. A good cleaning should the first thing to begin with, when buying old and used SAKs.
