Really dumb people make me laugh

I was in the grocery store yesterday and a very worried looking woman worn two small children were walking around, caring what appeared to be a small wicker bowl with grapes in it.  The woman was explaining to the baker that they had taken them from the hippy food store across the road after her little boy had eaten one.

She seemed convinced that the nefarious hippies had coated the grapes in angel dust.

The baker was trying to calm the woman down by saying that no one would have angel dust covered grapes free to take on the counter, when another baker came up behind the first and said "yeah, do you know how much that would cost?" as if the only reason you wouldn't offer angel dust coated grapes was because it's a poor marketing decision.   

The woman wouldn't let common sense get in her way so she told the bakers that the grapes cost  $4.50.

You could see the second baker was already quite tired of the lady and said "oh yeah, regular grapes cost $4. The other fifty cents must be to cover the cost of the angel dust...."

With some of the bakers I have known in my time, I can't say I'm surprised. 

If you're referring to 'angel dust' it's another name for the drug PCP.

That would be the one.  By the way, the kids seemed like normal kids, although a little bit frightened by their mother's reactions.  Not frightened enough judging by how much the woman was freaking out, which makes me think she does this kind of thing often.

I always considered West of Island Park to be Westboro and East of Holland Hintonburg. Between the two.....??

I know Fisher, but I don't recall seeing Shilington.  I go down that way all the time to the Home Depot and Costco.  The Costco gas station is usually the cheapest gas station in town, at least from what I have seen.  I often save almost $.10/L over what I would pay at my local stations, and in an 80L tank, that's worth going a bit out of the way. 

I've also dropped by LeBarons a few times, both before they closed and after.  I can see why they couldn't compete- their prices were way higher than even MEC, and MEC isn't usually known for rock bottom prices.  I have been wanting to get a Tread (for example) and MEC has them for $165, and LeBaron had them marked down to $179.  You'd think their prices would be better, being miles out of town.

As for what I think of the city, well, I like it.  I like that I am finally benefiting from the tax dollars from the rest of the country.  It amuses me that a giant sinkhole in the middle of the city appeared and disappeared within a few weeks, while it takes years to fill a pothole in Halifax!   

One thing that amuses me though, is that the 417 usually only moves at around 80km/hr, even when not blocked by traffic.  Before I went to Halifax I lived in Toronto, where I had blown through speed traps at 140km/hr and no one batted an eye, because 130-140km/hr was normal in a 100km/hr zone.  In fact, in the 90's, just before I left I recall them talking about raising the limit to 120 on the 401, but they decided not to because they felt that was just a way of giving people permission to drive even faster.  Heck, when I worked as an investigator I once drove from Hwy 10 in Mississauga all the way to Morningside in Scarborough at 185km/hr, and again, no issues whatsoever.

But here, more people are going 80 than 100 on the highway, which amuses me to no end.  I love that I set my cruise control for 90-95km/hr and I am passing everyone!  I tend to always drive slowly (if I speed, I usually only speed by a couple of km/hr on long trips) and here I feel like Speedy Gonzales, and I am not even in danger of getting a ticket!

I also really enjoy having the resources of being in a proper city again.  And, I get no end of amusement that if I am in the wrong lane of a road I can end up in the wrong province in minutes.  I also love that I can cross any one of the many bridges, and its all free.  Halifax, and it's sister city of Dartmouth (kind of like Gatineau, everyone lives on one side and works on the other) are held hostage by two bridges that cause serious traffic bootlenecks and cost a dollar to get across.  If you commute, that means it costs you an extra $10/week just to go to and from work.   And, if there's an accident on either bridge you also get to be very late for work.  One time one bridge was backed up due to an accident, and the other was closed because a guy was trying to commit suicide by jumping off it.  The entire city ground to a halt because of it.

But, in the end, I have lived in a lot of places, and each one has it's charms and it's drawbacks.  Ottawa seems to have the least amount of drawbacks, at least from what I have seen, although there are some things that annoy the hell out of me.  Right now I can't honestly tell you how annoyed I am by the temporary closure of Preston Street between Albert and Wellington that was supposed to be done and re-opened last week.

I absolutely LOVE Gatineau Park though.  I love the fact that even though I am in the city I can be in the Arboretum or Gatineau Park in minutes and be surrounded by trees.  I love that I am a couple of blocks away from getting cheap booze in Quebec and can (illegally) bring it home without an issue.

In short (I know, that ship has sailed!  P) I am enjoying things here.  It is a nice city.  I don't know how long I'll stay, but when it comes to places to live, I'm fairly easy to please!
