#12 - The F_at _astard
on: November 03, 2016, 07:54:26 PM
Yes indeed, my 12th knife, 40th birthday gift for my brother from another mother cousin.
One of my very first living memories is lying under a Gooseberry bush, picking & eating, and I'm sure we both still had nappies on.

Cousin does some hunting, so instead of the birthday hatchet http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,66418.msg1371963.html#new he's getting a knife:

I think Flat B@stard makes for a great name. Especially if the knife has a flat grind...

Looking forward to what you do with this one.

I've had considerable experience with polyester resin by now, but it taught me another lesson when I made the first slab of micarta for this knife.

The reaction with the hardener is affected by temperature, had enough experience with delayed hardening during the winter, and I've had resin go goopy before I was done before....
No problem, chuck it out and quickly mix some more.....

Same thing happened this round, only due to the heatwave the blobs formed by the setting resin was so far along they didn't compress, and weirdly enough distorted the whole slab.....a first for me

Skipped a few steps, new micarta made, fling and grinding, 90% done with sanding to 220 grit this afternoon

I am loving the knife and I think the name suits it perfectly!

Thanks everybody  :salute:

You can still see the marks, custom made for my cousins' hand.  Allowed for a much more generous handle than the previous knife, and still a lot of blade.....
Have to admit, doing that swedge wasn't fun and it's not perfect.....but pretty good

Hope to get the sanding down to 400 grit this afternoon after work, tomorrow I hope to grind 2 little Puukku, mostly so I don't start the forge to heat treat only one blade.

Time is running out  :ahhh

Heat treat done.  :salute:
Handle glued  :salute:
Shaped  :salute:
Still need to grind in the edge, sand and polish the blade and make a sheath.......by Wednesday

I oil the handles so the colours will pop a bit more, like here when it's wet

Thanks gents  :salute:

I overcame the Sunday afternoon lethargy and sharpened it, and pressed the Kydex sheath as well.

Since this knife will likely never do much chopping I wanted to leave it a bit harder, and from the sharpening it seems I got what I was looking for.

All that's left now is a bit of finishing work with 100/1200 grit sanding paper and the polisher.

Sheath needs to be shaped and drilled, D-ring fitted and then the lot covered with leather.

Ladies & Gents......I'm a bit proud of how this one turned out.
Bit of polishing left to do, hopefully my salary clears tomorrow so I can do that last bit fueled by beer  :gimme:

Sheath is leather covered kydex with copper rivets
