Leatherman Tread- anyone actually EDC'ing one?
on: November 05, 2016, 02:08:19 AM
Now that all the Tread hype seems to be over and we are left with the actual usefulness of the tool itself, who is actually wearing one, and how useful is it really?

I need larger wrists, so I would not have to take any link off.
 :D
How would Tread look when you combine the stainless and BO links?

For €200 retail, I'm not even considering a Thread, although I like the idea behind it.

I had one but never used it and traded it away :D I should have known better as I don't even wear a wrist watch  Sort of an impulse buy at a great deal  :D I can see it's merits but it just isn't for me

I saw one at REI and while it looked cool I passed on it.  If I were to come across one at a bargain I know I would come home with it.  I'm not much for jewelry so I don't know if I'd actually wear it.

An argument could be made for it looking cool (that's in the eye of the beholder of course) but I just wonder how functional it has really been for some people.  Also, I have fairly small wrists, so I wonder how many links I will have to take out for it to be comfortable, and how many of the functions I will lose due to my genetics?  I have to say, that kind of bothers me a bit, especially since I don't like things being too loose and flopping around on my wrist.

For folks with larger wrists, it seems annoying that they would have to spend almost $200 on a tool just to have to buy extra bits and pieces at an additional $25 each, which duplicates existing features instead of adding them.

I think if Leatherman is going to run with this, they really need to support it by adding new links/functions so users can customise their tool, or in the case of small wristed people like me, I could wear two of them, like Wonder Woman and not have to worry about duplication.    ::)

I have one that I traded for and  it is what it is. A bracelet. The price tag does seem high, but a few bracelets I've wanted in the past have been $100+ so to add function to quality makes the price rise. Some have said why have a tool that you don't use as a knock against the Tread. But honestly I can wear this more often than all the other full size tools that sit in my drawer. As a tool it's more for quick touch ups rather than full on repairs. One thing that bugs me is I'm use to wearing a watch. So it kind of sucks to have so much weight on my wrist without being able to tell time. I would gladly sacrifice several of the hex links for a watch face. All in all for me it's a bracelet first (a very cool bracelet) and a tool second (a wearable bit set really)

I have one and need to put it through its paces and review this  Leatherman product that it's worthy of. I hear so many negative comments and horrible reviews that bash this item so mad. Yes it's not a traditional multitool but for Leatherman to step out on a limb and try something completely different I feel it's worth a solid review. I don't think it's as bad as my wife says, I've got titanium bracelets and big watches with metal bands but she says it looks like I am a biker or I should have some gauges in my ears and tattoos. I honestly don't feel it's that bad and could definitely wear it everyday. I'm going to have to do so to give it the review it deserves.

Tim Leatherman wears that thing everywhere, he seems to be very into it. And he looks to have small wrists.

It could even be handy for someone not wanting to wear it. Like a mountain biker. 🚵

It's definitely seems to be a niche market.

Also, hasn't someone posted on moddingnit into a watch demel?

I agree. I would love to do a full review, but don't have enough to say on it yet.

I think so. I'm just to lazy to try it right now. Chrono links is the name I believe

There are few 'isues' that I feel are linked to this piece of tool/gadget.

First, there are people with smaller wrists which will have to simply optimize the remaining links selection to their core needs, then swap them if the need for another tool arises. One LM FB poster reported he wears two, S/S and DLC, one on each wrist to get access to a full set of Tread's tool implements. People laughed at his idea, not surprisingly.

Then there's people who bought it with a LM watch and others which started integrating the Tread with different watch heads of theirs, LM's Facebook page is full of them. Those usually loose 2-3 links, depending on the watch size or lug-to-lug distances.
While the links were supposed to be made of a sturdy 17-4 S/S, many have reported they appear soft, leading to damaged tips on tool implements.

Lastly, it's an over-priced, over-sized men jewelry, heavy one at that, depending on place and country you live in and your build and stature the Tread may appear 'over the top' or just silly looking on a grown up.

17/4 is used for it's corrosion resistance on marine propshafts and special fasteners, not screwdrivers. IIRC you'll struggle to get the hardness much above 40-45HrC so I'm not surprised if it's getting chewed up.

Aside from that, I pretty much agree with everything babola said. I think it should be sold as tool geek jewellery and not as a tool. In fact I actually think it's a bloody ugly snag hazard, but I don't see that being a particularly successful marketing tag line

I doubt this thread was started to become a Leatherman bashing thread. Real feedback from usage is better than speculation. I've seen some threads on other forms that I don't want to see here.

As a fan of many other LM tools, my intention wasn't that but I could see how it might have come across as such.

Sure, I'll shut up now, no probs :-)

The Tread should be lighter than any Invicta watch  :pok: I have a SS Tread, took links #2 and #4 to fit my chicken wrist. Definitely a men's jewelry item. Just make sure you do not have any ring, or another bracelet on the same arm as the Tread, as it provides enough metal already

I honestly can't see anyone to count on the Tread as a tool. It is an expensive screw driver bit set, and looks quite a pain in the rear to wash or clean up. If the links are made of the same material as the screws, they will get worn fairly fast. The Tread should make an excellent watch bracelet though, as it is lighter than all my Seiko watches.

OK;  I'm committed to this.  My tread has been adjusted to fit my wrist so there's some play but not super loose like before.  No rattle rattle on my wrist anymore.  Going to wear it like I do me heavy watches and push it into service. Going to use every opportunity I can, I'll have a real multi as back up but will only use it as a last resort.  Wish me luck

I like mine, but I wear a triple sensor watch on my left wrist and a Fitbit Charge 2 on the right. I don't have a third wrist to wear a charge on, and ankles would be out of the equation. Did hear there is a new Metric version being released.

Went to use a hex key to tighten a loose water bottle screw... could only manage 1/6th turns. Grabbed a ball ended hex key and got it done much quicker. Tread has its place and it's not the go-to for most things. It can come in handy, though for me it's not being carried anymore. Now if there was an adapter to fit the Fitbit Charge 2, I would consider it.
Surprised not to have seen enough Treads linked end to end that someone would had made a neck choker from it.

Not bashing, just making an observation.....

Of the many-many local shops that stock Leatherman, only one has a Tread on the shelve.......

Before getting a Fitbit I was wearing the Tread when was out and about. I guess... if I really wanted to... could do this...

Brr... that Tread was cold for a looong time... one issue I see is the Tread scraping up against the Fitbit Charge 2 a lot.

Haha.  Well most guys would need to remove a few more links for c-ring s and m usage lol.

I'd still rather have a tool in my pocket than wear it.  So it's jewelry that has some function.  I think that most of us aren't the target market.
