Spirit 30 day EDC
on: November 08, 2016, 06:41:58 PM
An attempt at the new badge.  :)

I'm going to carry my tool kit Spirit, which is a 2004 model with the VSSR tang. I have carried this many times, but not usually more than 4 or 5 days at a time, so this will be interesting and pretty fun for me. I was considering carrying the 2010 RT, but it's actually my spare, in case I lose or ruin my user, and I will want it to be fresh in case of that eventuality. I'm not sure what I'll get into in 30 days, but the Spirit, being the best (imo) MT ever made, should be up for it.

Also I'm not sure how much time I will have to post this month, but I will attempt to post a photo daily.  :tu:

I really miss my Spirit.
One of the few MTs that I could handle leaving stock.
Before challenges were a thing I carried the Spirit alongside detron's fate month.

You could get another Z Man? Too pricey there?

2. Vic can openers are the best, it's probably why they bought Wenger, to fit them with these.

Ha! Maybe it drove them crazy - like an itch you can't scratch, so buying them out was the only solution.

Amazing how many bad ones there are, this becomes clear when MT can openers are the only thing in the house!

Yeah way to expensive for me atm. I can't complain though as I have a couple other multis to use...

I quite like our kitchen can opener. It's one that cuts around the side not into the top...

I tried one of those Z Man, it was cool and left a nice edge, but it didn't fit in my pocket very well.  ;)

Cool thread Twiglet - how are you finding EDC'ing the Spirit? Thoughts for your thoughts.........

Cool thread Twiglet - how are you finding EDC'ing the Spirit? Thoughts for your thoughts.........

Thanks my friend.  :)

When I first got it I was experimenting with belt carry, which was ok, but pocket carrying it is much nicer. I use a safety pin and divide a front pocket so it stays vertical, and it virtually disappears until I need it. I do this for 111's too (and others), it works great. As far as the usefulness, it really lacks nothing that I need on a daily basis, so it's nice to have the basics plus great pliers. I used them just now to snip a few small branches (twiglets actually  :D) that were too big for the smallish scissors. The scissors are good, they handle precision cutting well and are exceptional for push cuts, but they could be bigger. The blade is great also, about the same cutting edge as the 91's, but I do prefer the Soldier/SI/Pioneer size now that I have carried these more, it's not a big difference but enough to notice with food prep. Also the profile of the 'butter blade' limits piercing cuts, so it's necessary to deploy the awl for those needs, but a Spirit X would solve that one. Also the saw and file are small compared to the 111's and 130's, but perfectly adequate for incidental use, much like the 91's. I think the bottom line for me is the pliers, I use them off and on, but don't have enough daily need to justify more permanent EDC, if I did, it would be my SAKMC choice (if it were truly a SAK that is  :P). Compared to any other MT I have used, this Spirit is far and away my favorite.  :)

And it's so sleek and shiny!  :dd:

Thanks for your thoughts Twiglet  :salute: The polished sleekness is reminiscent of the Naboo Stateship:

I like your pocket carry idea - how far down where the spirit sits do you put the safety pin? I agree with your opinions of the various tools - the scissors can be opened slightly wider if you force them, but it would be great if they were the same size as the 91mm SAK scissors (whether the Spirit counts as a SAK is a big question! I say yes, but then I'm in the SAKMC too so.....)

While the awl is excellent, I think the hook is an after thought - have you ever used it for anything?

Aside from the pliers, the outstanding tool for me is the butter blade - I so wish Vic would incorporate it in a 91 or 93 frame - love it!

It sounds like you won't have too much trouble doing the month  :salute:

The awl is good, but no, I have never used the Spirit's hook that I can recall, it's too far up the shank. I think it serves it purpose of keeping the awl from burying itself, but that's about it. I like the butter blade too, it performs well, but I prefer the 93mm spearpoint for all around use. Here's how my pocket divider works, I use Vic SOS kit safety pins of course!  It basically holds the lower half of the tool, and I can fetch it with thumb and forefinger.  :salute:

No I was wearing them, I'm that thin.  8)

Or...

Yes, I took them off just for that shot (the other day, then ran them through the laundry).  :D
