I tend to prefer the folding utility knife...however, I took the time to get a couple of classics.
1. Stanley No 199 fixed blade utility knife. This thing is a bit dangerous with a naked blade that doesn't retract for storage. On top of that, more than half the blade sticks out...meaning if you were to switch the blade around, you would get a lot of that side dull. There is blade storage in the handle...albeit loose storage which probably wouldn't be all that good on any sharp edges over time. The icing on the cake...you need a screwdriver to open this thing up to exchange the blade. Definitely old school.
2. A little more modern, but not by much, is the Stanley Classic 99. Much like the No 199 mentioned above, this one at least features a 3 stop retractable blade.
3. DeWALT dual gift package. Now for something a whole lot more modern, this gift package contains a very nice and sharp DeWALT knife blade along with a neat DeWALT utility knife that features an auto load blade.
That knife is very sharp...and feels rather good quality wise. Unfortunately, it does feature a half serrated blade. On the plus side, the blade does have a flipper mechanism that helps in pushing out that blade to make that thumb stud an easier endeavour.
The second half of the gift package is a very neat little utility blade.
Here is a top down view of the unfolded utility knife. The handle features grippy textured rubber.
Here is a bottom view. You can see the liner lock. Also, that black cover slides open to reveal the blade storage that can hold only 3 blades.
Unfolded, the utility knife is of a good size. That black side button close to the blade is the blade release button. The knife features a sliding retractable blade.
To access the blade storage, you need to slide the blade fully out, then pull on the black cover downwards. You can store 3 blades fully. This utility knife is an auto loader. Remove a worn blade. Then slide the blade mechanism fully back where it will automatically load the next blade.
Overall a neat little auto-loader.
