Anybody good with lensatic compass?
on: September 24, 2008, 12:01:21 AM
Got a question for ya, I want to buy a brunton 9077 compass, which is the military style with metal casing. There's also the fancy looking 8099 which is six time the price. Or pretty much any of their plastic lensatic (8097,  26DNL, 16DLU etc.) cost more than 9077 does. Does those plastic ones work better? Or are they more expensive just because they are newer design and such?

Here is a tip. I teach Map Compass and survival in my state. I spent many years as a Recon Marine and a ton of hours with the compass. But seriously dump the Lensatic, and geta  base plate one. It is way eisier to use, and will work with your map way nicer. However just google the lensatic compass book and it will bring you to the Military manual online for one.

It's a matter of taste and personal experience.  I prefer a Suunto KB-14 type compass because I've used them for years as a land surveyor.
