The one that got away
on: November 21, 2016, 12:34:47 AM
Do any of you folks have stories of the tools that got away? It could be a tool you almost purchased or could be a tool you had and sold/traded and now regret it. Here are some of the tools I wish I still had:

Kershaw A100 w/bit kit
Gerber MPT
Juice XE6
Bucktool 360
Leatherman Charge AL
Gerber Legend
Gerber Multilite
Leatherman Mini Tool
Original SOG Powerlock

These will forever be tools I'll be on the hunt for again and hope to add to my current collection. So what tools did you have that got away?

I got the gerber mpt on ebay,  however, when it came the pliers were off center when they were closed. I really only wanted it for my collection so I was tempted to keep it. In the end for the price I sent it back, then I was sad, especially since I didn't see any more popping up. About six months later I won one for way cheaper and in prefect condition. Good things come to those who wait, I will post some pics when I get home

Cool, the MPT is one sweet tool and reminds of us a time before multitools got fancy. Didn't Gerber get a military contract with this tool? Hence the name I guess

Send Mercury a PM.  I bought a bunch of them a number of years ago and I believe he may have them still.

OC Victorinox Harvester. Bought it a decade ago for $30. Sold it a year later for the same amount. Decided a year later that it was my grail knife, but didn't have $500 to buy another. Never see them come up for sale anymore. Guess I can kiss that dream goodbye. Not that I have the money to buy another anyway.

I'll add Recoil to my list,  I had one of those too.  That bugger would hurt you if you didn't watch it, like  switchpliers on steroids.

Before I knew what it was worth, I missed out on a VGC 84mm red ribbed Voyageur that was in a lot of knives that went for about $100. Could have recouped that by selling the other knives and had the precious for free.   :bnghd:

I had the opportunity to surreptitiously acquire a Watch Case opener, but my morals got the better of me and I didn't take it.

Sure, I did the right thing and might be allowed into heaven, but I don't have a sak with a watch case opener, so was it worth it?  ::)

Had a very old (pre-WWI?) Wenger with a very odd tool selection. Unfortunately one of the tools was broken and it irritated me every time I looked at the knife, so I sold it. Probably shouldn't have. Even with the broken tool it was a very rare knife, and I've never seen another like it.

Had one get away this morning. A nice blaze orange Wenger ranger. Good price, ok shipping listed for international. Heading out the door to work, nearing the end of the auction and placed my max bid.
Bam, ebay says seller does not ship to Australia, despite saying seller ships to Australia. ??? No time to organise a proxy bidder.

A long, long time ago I had a fisherman's knife similar to the one pictured.
I remember it very well, it bit me hard and left a big scar on my left index finger.
Probably it's still lying in the mud on the bottom of a river near Amsterdam.

I see almost all of the above tools (and Gerber Recoils) on the US bay of fleas fairly frequently (but sometimes the sellers are quite optimistic about how much they are worth).

My regret is not buying an original LM Juice SX (both handles black) back when they were readily available.

I missed a Buck184 Buckmaster for 25$ at a goodwill shop 20y ago
I had 15$ and by the time I got the parking change out of my car to make up the extra somone else had it.
I eventaly got a 639 Fieldmate (old run) at a flea market a year later, but at 300-500$+ a 184 is beyond what I'm willing to do. A dealer once offered 2 new run 639's for my old one when they came out, but I wasnt intrested in dealing that day.

Btw Goodwill no longer accepts/sells knives of any sort. The sorters are told to trash them immediately.

We had that for a while.

I'm not sure if I just live somewhere where they don't care, or if the rule has eased up a bit.

I wonder how many little red knives have missed out on good homes  :ahhh

Do any of you folks have stories of the tools that got awayMy list was almost identical to yours a while back, this is how it went

Kershaw A100: got it thanks to a fellow forumite here at MT.org, it had been modded, used and cared for. Great trade I did!
Gerber MPT - no interest at all
Juice XE6 - sold mine here at the "MT for sale" this year, I didn't like that LM at all (got it for $40)
Bucktool 360 - no interest at all
Leatherman Charge AL - have the Wave and Surge, so I don't care for this one
Gerber Legend - My favorite gerber so far, I got it for $25 on eBay.de and I liked it so much I got the MP700 this past month... Both are EXCELLENT!, way above my expectations. MP800 has been my most carried EDC multitool with my Spirit just behind
Gerber Multilite . never cared for
Leatherman Mini Tool - got it from eBay with four SAKs, as a freebie for my SAK purchase (seller had many cheap and chinese MTs and thought this one was another cheapo, five dollar tool, and he let me choose one of the "cheapos" he had to sweeten the deal hehe  :D)
Original SOG Powerlock - Got it from the same seller as the MiniTool, a month later, when I bought an original ST as well. $25

These will forever be tools I'll be on the hunt for again and hope to add to my current collection. So what tools did you have that got away?

Sent from my SM-G935V using Tapatalk

I "lost" an MP1 from Gerber by $2 (bid for $65, was sold for $67), a Schrade Vise Grip got lost in itinere but I got my refund, I found a BO Swisstool for $45 but had no cash at all, and short time so I couldn't get it,

and I'm still looking for the largest of the Schrade Vice Grips, a SOG Crosscut (never found one anywhere, and prices are way off on the internet) and Schrade Tough Chip, as well as a reasonably priced Wenger Mike Horn and a Wenger Swissgrip (lost one on the eBay this Summer, was sold for $55 and I had bid $50. )

My toys:

MTs: Surge (2x), Skeletool CX, Rebar, Blast, Fuse, Micra, Squirt (3x), Wave, Crunch, Mini, Spirit (2x), Pro Scout, MP700 (2x), Diesel, Powerlock, PowerPlier (2x), PocketPowerPlier, Blacktip , ST6 (2x), 5WR, A100

SAKs: Bantam, Executive, Ambassador, Minichamp, Classic Alox, Champion, Farmer, Explorer, Swisschamp, Golf Tool, Wenger Champ, EVO 52, Pocket Tool Chest

NiB Vic OC red alox Bantam that ended up going for about 20 bucks. I had decided it would sell for way over my budget, so I did not bother to bid at all

I hate you. I had all but forgotten this and now I am overwhelmed with remorse
A few years ago I walked over to a pawnshop while waiting for my wife and they had a Spyderwrench. The guy kept trying to sell it to me but I hesitated because it was missing  some bits. Now that I think about it I may have been able to buy a bit replacement from Spyderco or hardware store.

Correction: I called them and Kabar customer support is amazing!!!!!!! BK-17 and leather handled skinner on the way! By the way, if anyone is interested, the kabar website is currently matching every dollar that you spend to send you a free knife of your choice. I think it goes through sunday.

Hmm maybe time to try a Kabar, but which?

I havnet haad too many that have gotten away.  I did come across a micro tech and Benchmade that were priced really well even if I decided to flip them.  I hesitated and when I went back both were gone.  I wasn't too bummed but those do come to mind.

Make at least one of them a Becker. Great great knives that can take an incredible beating. Also there are tons of aftermarket scales and sheaths you can get.

I think I got everything I was chasing

There have been ones I bought again after selling. CS4 was just as disappointing as the first time, but I tweaked it a bit so I can tolerate it. Getting a Sideclip back was a very wise move though. I do wonder if I should have hung onto the Pulse for a while longer.....

Sometimes I gave stuff a second try and regretted it again... Pocketgrip, XE6, Rebar, Squirt P4.....

The ones I never got because the opportunity didn't present itself, I am glad about. I would have used them, ruined them, and moved them on again for a fraction of what I paid..... Kershaw A100, AlMar, Spyderwrench, Wenger Gawain

I decided to forego the popular American fixed blades from Kabar, ESSE and the others, in favour of local offerings from Sheffield. I don't feel I need to explore further, as these tick the boxes perfectly fine.

In short - no regrets. They all played their part in getting me where I am today. All part of the adventure.

I had recurring quality issues with them. Not had any problems whatsoever with the Gerber Dime

This thread has got me really thinking.  There was a kickstarter project called the Atom multitool.  I kick myself  (get it? Kickstarter? Kick myself? Ba dom dom) as it never took off after the first production.  But it was such a cool tool with clean lines.  I did hear there was some QC or inventory issue but I'm guessing the inventor was just doing this as a side job.

I'd post the kickstarter link (can't buy anything anyway) but I've already made a few posting mistakes and don't want to appear to be spamming  :(. But easy to google if you want to watch the video. I still watch it once in a while.
