I think the Damascus patterns are very good looking, and they make every piece unique. It's a bit like a fingerprint.
About the quality of Damascus, if good steels are used, and the hardening is done to standard, they can compete with any other knife.
I suppose if you could make a Damascus from lets say M390 and lets say CPM S10V, you should end up with a stainless supersteel Damascus that when hardened at a mix of both steels advised hardening, should produce a supersteel Damascus. The price would not be cheap, but it should be a performing result.
The only Damascus I currently own is from the Swedish Damasteel foundry. the have various patterns available, and the quality is very good, right up there with my best performing blades, and looking better while doing it.
But, as I'm not Rockefeller, and they are pricey I do tend to use them not that much, as sharpening any blade removes material, and the Damascus is too good looking to sharpen it too much.
To end this, every man should own a nice gentlemen s folder with a Damascus blade.
