The U.S. Army's logistics system doesn't work that way, especially for items that would be issued to individual soldiers.

Maybe if the req went in for every officer in HQ it would be approved

On the U.S. Navy base I grew up on, these knives by Camillus, were extremely common. Nearly everyone had one. The scales are stainless steel. It's basically a copy of the old soldier/pioneer.

I clearly remember once when I was in the Navy, I was working with the SK's in supply and I came across a box of these USGI pocket knives.. The interesting thing is that the handles were not steel but PLASTIC.. Although I handled one briefly, I didn't hold it long enough to inspect who the maker was, unfortunately. Especially since I was familiar with the model, and did think it odd that this was the case.

I have never seen those particular tools again, so a mystery for the ages perhaps..

Actually, it turns out that the Pioneer was a copy of the U.S. military knife shown above. Camillus began making that knife in 1949 which pre dates the Pioneer by several years.

When I was issued one at SUNY Maritime Academy I remember thinking how "junky" it was and how my knives were so much better. After destroying more than one of my "good" knives while afloat I began to wish I had kept the junk.
I miss that knife.
P.S. In some circles that model is referred to as the "Demo knife"

Jaya, do you have a pic that shows the writing on the side of it?  (The NSN appears to be rendered as a series of Xs, which is not particularly useful for the keen collector....)
