What is the general opinion on this knife?
on: November 14, 2016, 12:16:24 AM

I ordered this knife as my 10 year anniversary gift from work, Toyota.  I just wonder if it is considered a nice knife from the knife enthusiast community?

Be honest!!  It was free, so....

Bear Lockback.

Looks like a Buck 110 style lockback.  You should be able to get some use out of it,  that style is time tested and and if constructed well should last you. I would almost keep it as an heirloom if you have children.  There are some knives I have that are nice I'll pass down to my kids that are not users.

Is Bear a good name?  I see it's USA made, which is why I chose it.  I'm not normally a lockback carrier.  If I carry a knife, it's either my OTF auto, or my Delica... otherwise there's a Leatherman in my pocket.  I can't see ever carrying a knife in a sheath on my belt.

Bear is a good name, but their QC can be a bit hit or miss; I do greatly like their multitools, though. :D

+1 I can agree with this statement as I have a few of their MTs but none of their knives :tu: I think you will be safe with the lockback though  It looks very nice and we need some pics of it when it arrives  :D

If you do not want to be upset, do not read the hidden paragraph and enjoy your knife.
Happy anniversary

Bear and sons is coasting on past glory and charging a lot of money because they are US made without having the quality to justify the price. People buy their products because they want to buy a US product, and usually decide not to buy any more US products again. They are an embarrassment to US cutlery.  If you search in Bladeforums you will find various threads saying how bad they are. If you search MTO you will also find some information on them. They basically have not been worth buying for several years. Maybe you will get lucky and get a working knife. Buck would have been better, and cheaper - they do not even tell you what grade of steel they use, 440 SS can be anything.

Hey, it looks nice, The design has good ergonomics. If it's enough for your needs, nothing very heavy-duty or rough, it's a good enough knife. If you like it, too, I'd say it was a good choice.

  :tu:

440 can only be 440A
This is not a totally useless steel and you will most likely get a good working knife if the build quality of the lockback is sound (I'm in the "must handle it" for opinion group)

Having said that, $69 can get you a lot more than a 440A lockback in other brands.
Even a Buck 110 is quite a bit cheaper.

Gifts are the best; you dont have to justify value at all; enjoy the knife and congrats on the commitment to the company.

Most companies won't let you even carry a knife, let alone buy you one. Just that fact alone makes the knife worth it. Congratulations on your 10 years. For my 10 year anniversary, I got a whole lot of nothing, so good job getting something you can enjoy.
The right tool is the one you have on you

Looks like a great knife to me,  :tu: fit and finish looks really good.
440A is a small step above 420HC so I would say you made a good pick.  :like:
Enjoy it.
