Leatherman Kick Mods
on: December 04, 2016, 11:01:18 AM
Hi All,
I have just joined here with the hope of building the perfect multi tool.

After about 20 years of using around 12 different models,(mainly Leatherman's) I have now decided that I need to get into modifying them as I don't think anyone is ever going to build my perfect multi tool.
For background, my favourite is an original Wave but I cant fit a pocket clip. My most carried is an early Skeletool but it has very limited tools. I also have an original Charge Ti but I hate the little scissors and I don't like the bit holder due to the short bit length however with the pocket clip I can live with it.

Basically I need the following as essentials;
Lightweight
Pocket Clip - most essential as I end up leaving them in my packs if they don't have a clip
Scissors
Proper Phillips screwdriver
Small and Large Flat Blade screwdrivers
Saw
File - I'm happy to drop the knife blade as I always carry a knife

After looking around this site, I ended up getting a Leatherman Kick with pocket clip and know I need to start making some mods.

First question is can I add the larger Leatherman PST ii scissors (or early Wave) to the Kick or do I need to stick with the smaller type of scissors?

Thanks

George

Hi Kampfer,
Thanks for the images, your Kick looks great.
Can I ask what the saw is from?

Thanks.
I don't own it anymore, a member here got scammed over a purchase, I figured he needed it more than I do so this KickASS multitool was gifted to him. Before sending it out he requested me to replace the serrated blade with a REBAR saw to suit his needs.

You can read all about it in here: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,59023.0.html

Welcome to :MTO: George

The Kick is a very moddable LM and a Blast saw will work in it as well :tu: Most tools from a Kick, Fuse, Blast, Rebar and the inside tools from the new Wave are interchangeable  Hopefully that bit of info will help with your modding and also we have a member here, loki-mobile who has wrenches made to work on LM and also he sells individual parts as well :tu: Here is a link to his thread and you can ask him what he has available after you get a list of stuff you want that you don't have :tu:

Hi Poncho65,
Thanks for the tip about the tools that loki-mobile sells. They should make the job very easy - l was worried l would mash up the heads using vice grips.

Any idea if l can make the lager PST ii scissors fit the Kick?

George

Poncho65,
Can you tell me how to get in touch with loki-mobile?
Does this forum have a private message option or do l need his email?
Cheers
George

Pivot of the large scissors may be the same but I don't know if they will go or not   I have no problem with the smaller scissors though :tu: Also you have over 5 posts now and you can PM him like hiraethus said

Tell him what you are wanting to do and he will see if he has the parts you need :like:

I used the 2 Kick clips for years as wrenches :salute: but the loki wrenches do so much better of a job IMO :tu: Plus it is getting harder and harder to find Kick clips these days :-\

That is right, I ordered Loki's 11th set of wrenches. They are the MT of 2015 in my book.

Does anyone know if the Kick and Fuse have the same width in the handles?
i.e. did they fit the scissors (and incorporate the tool locks) into the Fuse?
Cheers

I will have to check but I think that the Fuse is wider  All the tools should be interchangeable though :tu: You just won't fit as much in the Kick as you can the Fuse I think

Thanks Poncho65, that what l thought as well. The reason l went with the Kick is because l want a lightweight tool that has a pocket clip - but l would like to have a bit more room in order to have sufficient tools.

I think l have seen a few mods (on other leatherman tools) that used the hollow Kick pivot  in order to use the pocket clip.

Can someone explain how this works? I assumed that the Kick pivot would be too short to use on wider tools.

Actually because of the Zytel the Kick is pretty close to the same width as the Rebar :tu: I used a Kick pivot in my Rebar and have a clip on it right now and here is a pic :tu:

I'm still waiting for my tools/parts from Loki to arrive so in the meantime l have decided on the plan for this Kick. I will replace the knife with the Blast's saw and sneak in the Blast's file on the other side. I will carry this along with a Yeoman and a mini Griptillian so scissors and a knife will be covered. There will be some room left over so l might squeeze in an awl as well, but that's stage 2.

I also just purchased a PST ii (not recieved as yet) and l was wondering if l can replace the serrated blade with the one left over from the Kick?

Also how does the width of the PST ii compare with the Kick? Would it be possible to use the pocket clip pivot pin from (another) Kick to add a pocket clip to the PST ii?

Cheers

George

The Kick blade may be too long but you could always shorten it to fit. I believe the Kick pivot would also be too long but you could also trim it to fit as well.

Good luck and be sure to post some pics   :tu:

Thanks Guys,
So l take it that the PST's are shorter and narrower than the Kick? More compactness is always more appealing so is there any disadvantages to the PST ii over the Kick? Are the pliers smaller then?
Anyway removing material is no issue compared adding material...
I'll definitely post some pics once l've done it.

I finally got my tools and parts ( :tu:Loki) and I was able to mod my Kick yesterday. Originally I had wanted to install a Blast saw, a Blast file and the Charge scissors, however I had a last minute change of heart and could go not knifeless - so I only added the saw and the scissors.

It was fairly easy and I ended up only having to file off a little off the bottom of the saw and it fitted perfectly. I also had to file a little notch in the scissors tab to clear the small screw driver's length.

I'm very happy with it as it has all the commonly used tools hat I need and its lightweight and has a pocket clip (must have for me). I am totally sold on the Kicks screwdrivers - I have put up with the limitations of the short and fat Leatherman bits for too long.

I am however toying with the idea of switching the scissors out for a Rebar awl as I normally carry a mini-griptillian and a Yeoman.

Thanks for everyone's help and a BIG thank you to Loki.

Looking forward to my next build - a new Wave with SAK scissors and real drivers

Can anyone confirm the thread size of the Kick pocket clip screw?
I think it's 5-40 UNC.
I'm thinking about drilling and tapping one of the pivots on a PST ii in order to fit a Kick pocket clip.
