What Tool Would you Deep Six?
on: December 05, 2016, 10:34:25 PM
Amici,
Just thought I would throw it out there to see what tool is it that you can live without?

Knowing that you can pretty much get the SAK that fits all your needs, what if Victorinox posted that they were no longer going to include a specific tool on any of their models?

If you were given the question, what tool would you ditch?

As for me, I think the worst tool still included on most versions is the corkscrew.

Although I can pretty much avoid them about 95% of the time, there are those few models that you just can't help but having to get stuck with them.

For example, I would love to have the choice of two different Phillips screw drivers on either the Champion or Swiss Champ, instead of the tool from another time, and if given the chance, I would drop it in a heart beat. But alas I cannot..

So for me, get rid of the screw driver, how about you?

Cheers,
Serge

I'm using the corkscrew more often than any screwdriver..
Should V choose to ditch the corkscrew, I'd buy me a few Waiters.

If you live in Europe and drink wine, you need a corkscrew...

I'd ditch the package hook - totally useless to me.

You know--none, other than the 91mm wood chisel, which is in a bad place to be used effectively.   The corkscrew does a good job getting knots undone when you decide to leave your rigging knife with the full-sized marlinspike at home, which I often carry ,despite living a good 5-6 hours from any coastline. We use 550 cord to tie a lot of stuff down such as tarps on the farm, and usually when I double knot my shoelaces, they won't come loose.   Plus, you can carry the eyeglass screwdriver inside of it.

Come to think of it, as most of the time I also carry another blade anyway, in fact the main blade is the most useless tool on my SAK.  :D

Corkscrew, totally. It just gets in the way of the ergonomics, especially on thinner models.

I would totally do away with the fish scaler :D Never gonna use that on a SAK and they could put the ruler on the back of the saw if they really wanted to include it

I never use the fishscaler and the backside chisel. Wouldn't mind if Victorinox does away with it.

Give some then take some.  I do wish and hope that Victorinox:

1. Introduce the inline awl as a standard on the 91mm models... They're damn good
2. Reintroduce scissors on 84mm models
3. Introduce Spirit chisel/package opener/wire stripper on SAKs
4. Re-think the design of Spirit scissors.

I've never used a fish scaler and would have to watch a YouTube video on how to use it if I did.
I've never used the package hook, although it is fun to watch videos on how people improvise with it.
Rest in peace ColoSwiss, you will always be remembered.

+1.  I think the fish scaler makes a decent letter opener, but I can't imagine the cleanup involved after using one!  Good thing I'm a catch and release man :D :D.  Just my .02, but I'd love to see the 84mm lineup brought back up to full capacity.  They pocket like nothing else this side of a Wenger!

Backside phillips without a doubt. The T shape makes it almost unuseable for actually getting a clear space to turn most screws I come across. ( my most carried is a cybertool anyway)
I can come up for other uses for a corkscrew( like removing the metal grill for some roof speakers yesterday), the phillips, not so much.
And my hands aren't exactly dainty enough to even notice the CS slight protrusion.

I'm beginning to think all Phillips screwdrivers are a bad idea on a SAK. The inline one is useless because it is the shortest screwdriver ever made and widens towards the base, making it incapable of reaching screws buried deep in plastic as they often are on children's toys, radios etc. And the backside one (which I prefer) has greater reach and no taper, but is notoriously useless in tight spaces.
Additionally, any Phillips screwdriver in frequent use eventually frays and loses its shape; a worn out tool means you might as well replace the whole SAK. So, given the choice, I will always reach for a proper screwdriver with replaceable bits.
That said, I prefer having a Phillips instead of a corkscrew on some SAKs simply because nobody, not even Serge Gainsbourg, needs 17 corkscrews at any given moment.

I love the fish scaler - I use it for back scratching, hand massages, digging in earth... I've never done anything fishy with it, however.

Definitely the fish scaler and the chisel. I had to work to find a use for these during my Stack badge.

That said I wish they would offer the Skipper with an OHO blade, even to just add an eye to the existing slide-lock blade style. The lack of OHO is the only reason I carry the Trekker over the Skipper. I was thinking of a mod with a NS Sentinel stuffed between the pliers and the stock blade. That way I'd have both NS and serrated. Mabey next year.

Edit
This idea is dependent on if the pin sizes are compatible. I need to get over to mods and do some research.

The small blade is one of my favorite things and most used on the 91's. Wish the 93's had the small blade instead of the awl, I have so many more uses for it. I tend to use the 93's awl more as a small blade, but it's not ideal. Also the combo tool is such a useless thing that it would make total sense to have a small blade there, which is why I don't make engineering decisions for Vic I'm sure...  ;)

Just thought of another tool that they could deep six, the nail file. I have absolutely no use for it, sorry Cadet and Wenger fans...  :P  ;)

Definitely personal preference territory.

Reading thru the responses I think I'm ready to answer.  The question is what TOOL would you deep six and my answer is the hook.

There are others but answering the OP question thats what I would deep six.  I have an old Champion thats hookless and I don't ever miss it.

Some good responses guys  and I can sympathize about all the phillips driver on SAKs  I always find that the end of the nail file on the Executive is perfect for small phillips screws in toys or in general and I always counted it more as a 2d driver than a nail cleaner, which it is great at that as well :like:
