Jammed on flick
on: December 06, 2016, 09:57:41 PM
I have an older Gerber multiplier pocket tool, U.S PATENT 5142721 5212844-- here is what is happening: when I "flick" it out to open it gets caught about 2/3 of the way out and the handles---won't open as a result, I love this tool , I have had it for over 20 years when I got into the Army but I recently retired. HELP!

First off welcome to :MTO:

I would check to see if anything is jammed in there preventing this  Has it been dropped lately casuing it to bind it maybe ??? Hope you get it figured out though :tu:

I don't know if it's just a trick of the light, but it looks like the plier pivot has become displaced....  maybe that's jamming up where the handles narrow

Of course if it's a trick of the light, I could be completely wrong  :D

If you unscrew the dome capped screws either side of the release buttons, you will be able to open the tool up for a closer look, and slide the plier unit manually up and down each channel to see where it's catching.

Good spot mate, that doesn't look right to me either.  My guess is that it's hitting the handle pivot rather than sliding up along side it.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Glad it's not just my eyes.

Eric, do what I said with removing the screws and the release button assembly. It's possible the pivot rivet in the plier head is "floating" due to wear, or worst case scenario is that it has sheared. If it's floating, you may be able to peen it out a bit, or do the centre punch trick with it. If it has sheared, I would send / email pictures to Gerber and see if they can fix it without just sending you a new replacement tool.

If they can't help, maybe we can. These "Mr Pinchy" tools as we call them, crop up every so often on ebay or in our for sale/trade forum. You could always grab one of those as a donor to pinch the plier head from to get yours back working again
