84mm Climber w/ hook?
on: December 07, 2016, 02:24:59 PM
There's what looks to be nylon scaled Small Climber on the Bay, but it shows a hook on the backside.  Did they come with a hook or were they discontinued prior to the hook?  SAK Wiki only shows them without the hook, so I'm more inclined to believe that the Bay knife is a 91mm.

I've never actually seen an 84mm Climber, much less one with a hook. I'm more inclined to believe it's all just a rumor anyway.   :climber:

That makes two of us!  I'd love to have one just to see how nicely it carries.

There is a quick way to spot if a Vic' SAK is 84mm or 91mm.
If the awl/corkscrew pivot is nearly inline with the point of the shield it's 84. If there is a gap the size of the shield it's 91mm

Small climbers certainly do exist.  Here are a couple of mine  Both in horn scales, one a 1940's Armee Suisse and the other a 1950's Victoria.

But 84mm scissors were discontinued long before the introduction of that abomination the hook.

The trick that @PTRSAK pointed out is the quickest way to differentiate an 84mm from a 91mm...

84mm knives have never been produced beyond 4 layers... existing models are max 2 layers... rest assured, 3-4 layers are discontinued models...

84mm models only have the phillips/corkscrew and awl as backtools. Older models may have the long file...

cmiiw...

Bring back the scissors on 84mm... You hear me Victorinox...

Unfortunately the Delemont Vic's probably stopped that from ever happening.
But as I proved, http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,41486.0.html , it's not a big job to fit the "Wenger" scossors into the 84mm Victorinox frame. Maybe a factory version of this "mod". All they would need to do is a new backspring, much less work than both scissors and spring.

At one time I did consider your approach for my 84mm Golfer build. But then went for 91mm scissor implant as I couldn't get myself to like the Delemont scissor serrations (self sharpening). Just my preference...
