Alternate to Traditional Carving for Staff
on: April 03, 2018, 07:14:45 PM
Old, naturally aged oak "Wizard" staff. 180cm/just under 6'

Judging by the position of this oak branch, its isolation, soil and leaf build-up, I'd estimate that it was weathered outdoors for 10 or 15 years.  By alternate carving, I mean that I let the piece tell me what to do, especially by removing soft or decomposing parts, and sawing minimally to remove awkward or unattractive bits and branches. Then I had to evict the residents, who had helped to lighten up the staff by "skeletonizing" the interior. A few holes and splits were filled with a classic carpenter's glue. Lot of work for the small pen blade, for the little chisel, the file, and even the mini-pliers, all on various SAKs.  Fine sandpaper, and, finally lots of hand rubbing with olive oil. Voilà!

Some great texture on that thing. You're one clay pipe and a pointy hat away from true wizardry.  :tu:

That is at least a 1d12 dmg staff with a +1 modifier.

It also grants a +4 Charisma bonus to any interaction with nerdy whittling/carving people.
