Multitool celebrities?
on: December 12, 2016, 06:58:04 PM
I just posted about multitool celebrities in the MTO Blog on the Main Site and it got me thinking- what big names should any/all multitool enthusiasts should know?  Here's a quick list that I put together, but who should be added?  Should any of my list be removed because they may not be interesting enough for celebrity status?

Tim Leatherman- obvious one, and should always top a list like this
Spencer Frazer- owner and lead designer of SOG
Blackie Collins- iconic knife designer and co-designer of the SOG ParaTool
Launce Barber and Tom Stokes- co founders of ID Works, responsible for many of CRKTs multitiol designs
Karl Elsener- founder of Victorinox
Les Stroud- TV survivalist, off grid enthusiast frequently seen with a Leatherman or Victorinox multitool, now a spokesperson for Camillus
Bear Grylls- TV survivalist, Everest climber, former SAS, has his name and logo on numerous multitools in the Gerber line
Angus MacGuyver- fictional character with exceptional scientific and engineering knowledge, famous for manufacturing solutions to all manner of problems with nothing more than a Swiss Army Knife
Mythbusters- Adam Savage, Jamie Hyneman, Tory Belecci, Kari Byron and Grant Imahara all have been seen on Mythbusters using or just carrying a multitool of some sort
Glenn Klecker- Inventor of the KLAX multitool axe, but also the guy who originally designed the Skeletool while working at Leatherman
Peter Atwood- The largest influence on the On Piece Tool segment in the modern era

Who am I missing?

I knew Adam Savage carried a multi tool but I didn't know the other Mythbusters did, makes sense though.

In the last season, you see Jamies Spirit quite often.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Thanks, but owning a website is hardly worthy of making one a celebrity.  :P

If we were to add MTO members, then Bob "J-Sews"Milliron would be at the top of the list. You'd be hard pressed to find someone with as extensive a collection or a fraction of the knowledge that man has. :D

Yup.  They mentioned it a few times in the series.  Now you know why everyone called him Mac.  :D

Second last entry in the Internet Movie Data Base Trivia section:

Quote
MacGyver's first name is Angus
7 of 9 people found this interesting

I didn't realize 7 of 9 was even in that show....

I would agree.

Aggregator of all things Multitool and Swiss Army Knife (SAK).  MTO is the most authoritative source of MT and SAK information on the web.  Definitely qualifies for the list of celebrities. 8)

If that's your logic then Ken from the BM deserves that spot as he knows all about multitools and is willing to share that knowledge with the unwashed masses here.  :D

Carl Elsener Jr, and probably that entire line, qualifies as celebrities in this rather non-celebrity type of celebrity. I guess the designers which have some name recognition, like Jesper Voxnæs, Jens Ansø, and Liong Mah qualify as well. (Probably more, those are just the ones I thought of first.)

One of the neat things about Mythbusters was that they had a very informal set for shooting.  In many cases, literally anyone could just show up and watch them shoot the episodes.  I was told by someone who no longer works at Leatherman that they took the opportunity once to load a box up with a bunch of different models, went to hang out and watch the show being filmed, and left the box there for the cast and crew to divide up however they liked.  :D

Which might be why we see so many different Leathermans on the show.

It was funny to me because shortly after I heard that story I saw an interview with Jamie talking about his EDC, and he apparently likes the Leatherman pouch but prefers the Spirit, so when you see him wearing a LM sheath there's actually a Victorinox inside of it!  :D

How about the two kirks? Ray Kirk the knife maker and crkt's kert designer. And then kirky who is to blame for all things related to multitools.

I think they are both mostly known for knives than for multitools.  Rick has a few rescue tools but Ken is pretty much knives only.  Mind you, his assisted opening design has been hugely successful and has influenced multitool design- both Gerber and SOG have assisted opening blades on multitools.

That certainly makes them contenders for the list.

who put up with his broke arse, driving across europe, and probably eating a bunch of ramen noodles while he dicked around in the garage trying to get his idea off the ground for 5 years!
