New Swiss pocket knife
on: December 19, 2016, 08:46:02 PM
Just spotted this:
http://malvaux.ch/en/
A pricey crooked Old Cross Solo.

Besides "we need more tools" any thoughts?

Expensive with an uncomfortable handle.

Props to them for thinking a bit different but not something I would buy

Odd shape that looks like it would be uncomfortable to hold and carry. Only a single blade and it weighs 88 grams? 18 grams more than a Pioneer.

I hate to be such a Debbie Downer but for me it's a "No, thanks."

On a positive note, their website is super cool!

My 5 cents: Odd blade shape.  No pocket clip. Smaller then a Solo (89,4 vs 93mm) and twice as heavy. (44 vs 88gr?)

I suspect their marketing strategy of having a go at Victorinox isn't the best idea. ;)  Implying that Vics are uncomfortable and should be discounted as souvenirs is just bad form IMO.

"The classic Swiss Army knife has two weak spots: It's ergonomics and the opening of the blade. Malvaux has tackled these issues by re-designing the knife from scratch. The result: A bent knife. The blade can be opened without the classic fingernail struggle and every cut is upmost precise. The knife sits perfectly in the hand. Tradition re-interpreted. A new icon, no souvenir but a proper strong ultra sharp pocket knife."

Oh, and I'm awfully glad of this;

why would anyone buy a knife with a broken handle?

I like that it comes with screw pivots from the factory. But otherwise it's a cool website and a gimmicky handle.

Not gonna produce too many friends with that attitude, I like locking blades for SAFETY, not combat.

Nice website as many have already mentioned, and I have to also agree that negative advertising is not the way to go - especially going up against an icon of perfect design and quality like the SAK - what are they thinking?

Want a more ergonomic knife. Go with a Copperhead or Sowbelly. Very comfortable handles, more blades, and a fraction of the cost.

I would love to try one of these.
But they are really on drugs with that 233 Euro price tag.

Some bold statements made by them as well

Shell and Weight Malvaux Number 1 is heavy. With 88 grams it cannot be compared with its distant relatives that wear a plastic uniform.

Gee, and I thought Spydercos were expensive. When I look at this knife, all I see is an $10 knife, not an $250 knife.

Ugly, weird handle (pruner like handle, but straight drop point blade).  A Spyderco Police is $80 or so, and a much better, and higher quality knife.   For $250 in Swiss knives, you can get the ridiculously oversized SwissChamp XAVT with everything including the kitchen sink--or the more reasonable XLT model and the traditional knife of your choice.

Unless Syph has radically raised his prices, I think I would go with one of his easy open Solos first. It would have all the advantages they claim those have, and it would be much lighter and nicer to pocket carry without those goofy looking awkward handles.  :P

Besides, if I can get 10 Sentinels for that price, there would be no need to replace any blades, and a single Sentinel would last a lifetime (not to mention the lifetime warranty!). Maybe they expect the folks that buy them will be using the blade to pry stuff with since it has no other tools.

Oh, and we  :like: our plastic uniforms!  :climber:

Have they not heard of ALOX?  :twak:

If I'm going to pay that much money for just one blade, it'll have to be the Excalibur itself.

Is it interesting and different? Yes.
Is it the SAK-evolution it claims to be? Depends on what you see as an "evolution". "Evolution" does not equal "revolution".
Would I use it instead of (for example) Victorinox Alox Solo? No. I prefer the straight-forward Vic elegance and there is nothing "unergonomic" about Vic designs.
250 CHF? From a regular user's point of view - no way, thanks, goodbye, case closed. From a collector's point of view - yay, another limited edition knife for my collection, here's my 250 CHF cheque for you, gentlemen.

Too expensive to be the "user" knife for masses and a bit too ordinary to be some kind of really special shelf queen.
Looks like some guys decided to play knife hipsters, make a wannabe SAK-reborn knife and put it on a market with an abnormal price just to see how many other knife hipsters would buy it. But hey, to each his own.

No mention of what the knife steel actually is apart from "stainless steel" - at that price I'd want S35v or something comparable

Understandable certainly, mostly I use non locking knives anyway.

I don't think they needed to imply that my Hercules was out to stab somebody though. It's probably just a language thing. They could have said "a non locking design for peaceful use anywhere in the world" or something.

But mainly, it's that price that really stabs!

The handle doesn't look very ergonomic to me. The words "mal" and "faux" come to mind. Painfully wrong.

Like the site more than the knife. It's a good thing they have an englisch version. I just started to learn englisch and this is a good way of practicing.

Love the text on the lever:
Across the precise "death spot" the blade locks perfectly into its final position. The blade cannot be locked.

They say it in the same breath.

Also like the blade strength of 3mm. And the handle legth. None of my knives has a legth. I think this alone is a good reason to get one of these. Oh, that and the Welcome Greeting...
