Little old hammers
on: September 29, 2008, 12:47:51 AM
It was a damp cool Sunday morning and I suspected my trip to the car boot sale would be disappointing.  Surely only idiots like me would get out of their warm beds to go stand in a foggy field today.  Luckily I'm British; so there were quite a few other slightly deranged individuals huddling around their paste tables peddling their wares.

Today was actually a good finds day, of possible interest to the types on this forum were: two SAKs (a boxed Spartan and a Scientist), the Collins gem SAS Survival Guide, an oldish brass 2xAAA Ever Ready pen torch, a new sturdy looking orange folding knife from G.Ibberson and these two rather nice little hammers.

Both are around 22cm (8.5") with the heavier being 120g (4.3 oz) and the smaller 70g(2.5 oz). I've no idea where they originated or how old they are but I'm definitely looking forward to using them in my knife tinkering activities.

No markings on them at all?  They look like very nice.

And the Scientist is pretty rare and fetches a pretty penny!  How much you pay?

No markings I can see but I've learnt from experience so I'll have a really close look in good light tomorrow.

I rarely pay much for much at car boots.  The Scientist was a total bargain, £2 and in good condition.  I already have a beater Scientist and a home grown one with the new style magnifier so I really should flog it ... but I'm weak  :-[

ha, ha ha ha... ha ...  no.

I will sort you out some more parts though Dave.  They're presently in a ugly looking pile on my workbench.  There will be a slight delay in that I'm committed to sorting out my knife collection before I start tidying my work area.  Before Christmas shouldn't be a problem though :)

Lol thanks Neil. I'm going to pick up some new / good 91mm jobbies from ebay I think, as I need decent quality liners. I've seen those ECO models go for not much.

I want to build it as a fishing knife, any ideas? I have a disgourger in great nick, I'll stick a large / small blade on there too, I'm open to suggestions about what else should go on there.

Oh - it will have mahogany scales too  :)

I used to come here a lot.

I'm tempted to attack a P4 but its pretty low down on the project list.

Dave, I'd go for the same tools as a Vic. Fisherman but with the addition of pliers.  I think I've even got an alox fish inlay you can put on the scales.

Ooh - that sounds nice Neil - I'm not sure if my carpentry skills will be up to that though. How thick is it?

@ Ben - Nah - I'd smash mod squirts too if I felt like it. I'm cold mate - stone cold.  :D

Very thin, there are probably proper techniques for doing this kind of thing (that I don't know) but I'd press it into place, then remove, varnish put it back, let dry and after the next couple of coats it would be in place below the surface.

If you weren't planning on using a varnish I'm not sure how I'd get it to stay put

I'm not planning any shoes but they are a nice weight for the kind of thing I do.  I'll put them with the leather/shoe making knife I found the other week (once I get it cleaned up).  :)

Here's the old knife I found the other week.   It was at the back of my father-in-law's shed.  Which hadn't been cleared out in decades.  Apparently his father used it when repairing shoes.

They're finely honed through years of looking through piles of baby clothes, old VHS tapes, used electric razors (ugh!) and those plastic cylindrical broad bean cutters that everyone seemed to own a couple of decades ago but never actually used.  Despite this weeks bounty most of the time I leave boot sales wondering why everyone hoards such amazingly large amounts of total crap :D

Nobody mention people in glass houses now  :-[
