This thread prompted me to try something out that I’ve been putting off for a while.

Paper matches have many useful virtues, but they are prone to dampness and getting wet. I’ve had matches that were paraffin coated in order to improve their weather/climate resilience, but books of paper matches have become harder to find.

The exception being, Diamond’s green tipped paper matches.

So I thought I’d test out paraffin coating a book of green tip matches and reporting my findings here.

Fresh book of Diamond Green tips. These have been stored in a cool dry place and kept in a zip top bag.

First thing: If the striker gets gummed up with paraffin, the matches won’t strike, so I covered the striker with gaffer tape to keep it paraffin-free.

Next I dunked the entire book of matches into melted paraffin:

The matches were left to dry.

Once the tape was removed, the striker looked good. I used the pen blade of my SAK to clean off as much paraffin as I could, and then attempted to fire up the green tip:

FAIL.

The match seemed to strike and fire, but then just smoldered. I suspected that some residual paraffin had melted and smothered the match.

So, I tried scraping the match head more thoroughly.

FAIL.

…..and another FAIL.

Just to test the striker. I lit an uncoated match with the coated matchbook’s striker.

No problems (see match above, second from bottom).

I then tested a paraffin-coated red-tipped wooden match on the coated matchbook’s striker (after scraping the paraffin of the red tip).

It fired up, all be it with a slight sputter, initially (see bottom-most match in photo above).

So, for whatever reason, Diamond’s green-tip paper matches are not amenable to being paraffin coated in my opinion.

I labeled the MTo Hack #1 because I though I might try a separate ‘hack’ by just coating the match heads. However, since coating the green-tip match heads proved to be a disaster, I won’t be testing the green-tips further, aside from normal use.

I will say, as they come, green tips have worked well for me.

Great test review Nix  :like:

How about using an alternative water-proofing material such as a silicone spray or even a non-stick cooking spray?

Based on these results, I suspect that a spray coating would similarly stifle the match's ability to burn. And might gum up the striker.  But....until it's tested, I suppose it's possible.

I have some PAM cooking spray, but that contains lecithin. Lecithin can act as an emulsifier and bind with water. With that in mind, I think Pam cooking spray would be a doubtful choice. I don't know if other cooking sprays might have similar issues.

I don't think I have any silicone spray. That might be worth testing.

Great test, Nix :like: and to bad it failed :( but we learned that it doesn't work so that is good :tu: silicon spray might work and I will see if I can think of any other type of coating that might make them waterproof

This guy makes Strike Anywhere and waterproof matches  He uses kid cap gun disks and a MT (yes a MT :D ) to make them Strike Anywhere and then dips them in wax to make them waterproof :like: Just be careful not to pop the caps while gathering material though

Props to him for using a MT to help in making these :salute: :like:

That’s a great idea to make your own matches.  :like:

Double-points for MT use.  :)

I have to wonder if caps are not harder to find these days than matches?

Also, you'd get a decent spark from a cap itself, why not just try lighting tinder with a cap?

Painting on some nail polish to the match so water doesnt wick its way up and it'll coat the match head and its flammable  so..

Bees' wax can be sticky. I'm not sure that is going to be viable. Remember, you have to be able to scrape the protective layer of the head so it can generate friction with the striker.

It would smell better, though.

Nail polish?

Extra points for thinking outside the box. I'm highly skeptical.

Is the plan to paint each match with a protective coating of "Romance Red"? And then scrape it off before using? I don't know.....that polish is pretty adherent stuff once it dries.

If dried nail polish were flammable, I suspect many cosmetically-oriented people would end up with burning fingers when engaged in routine activities like cooking, smoking , or using flamethrowers. Burning fingernails probably causes cancer in California, so that might be a downside, too.

Remember here: the paraffin trick did work with red tip, wooden matches. I just couldn't get it to work for me with green tip matches. That suggests that before using this trick, it would be a good idea to test it out on which ever matches you prefer.

Really am hoping to find some caps this weekend and make that slurry up to dip the matches in and make them super easy strike anywhere :dd:

Also I received the UCO Firefly Match safe/flashlight :mail: it seems to be very good quality and I already have matches in it :D I will get pics and perhaps test it and the light out :tu: I did actually go out and try the light for a minute

The light is ok but not as bright as I had hoped  :ahhh of course in an emergency or even out camping it would allow someone to get their tinder together, their matches out and light a fire  which is the purpose of this light :salute:
