No no no... No Cold Steel or Spidey. You want a Seki-made SOG  :tu:

The only Cold Steel I have is a Ti lite in Zytel.  Pretty awesome blade IMO.  I love the stiletto-esk look to it.

I went to their parking lot sale and got a chance to handle all their models. I selected the 1st generation American Lawman as it was one of the few models that actually had a finger cut out near the choil enabling the user to choke up on the blade. The 2nd generation is thinner with more premium steel, I don't have a strong opinion for the latest reiteration only that the CS employee at the sale eyed my 1st generation purchase with some longing. Said that he felt it was the better of the 2 as it filled up the hand better. I agree. But I can attest that it will fill up the pocket a bit. I like it because I'm a fan of AUS8. I have a few expensive knives with exotic steels and I've come to the conclusion that the loss of ease of sharpening wasn't worth it when out in the field.
With that said I've heard a few folks have modded the AL by buying both models and swapping the blade.

Have fun!!

come on if you ever decide to do pullups and can't find a bar, CS tri-ad locks can handle it. thus you need one

I'll nominate two options:

1) Cold Steel SRK survival knife. I have the San Mai III version, but you can get the black coated version with different steel for less

2) For when you want a tiny folder, the Cold Steel Micro Recon is awesome. Comes in spear point, drop point and tanto point

I could recommend Cold 4 to anyone.
A decent size blade but super thin and light weight, you will forget there is a 3.5" blade in pocket until you pull it out.
It is simple and elegant, fine choice for any occasions.
Three different blade shapes to choose from to suit your needs.
Tactical, survival, utility or dress knife, Cold 4 can be all.

Cold 4 = BEAST
Big but not cumbersome
Elegant but not fancy
Advanced material but not expensive
Simple but not crude
Tough but not over built

I'm one here who isn't exactly a fan of modern tacticals, but I love the look of the Trail Master.  Oh, and by the way, Cold Steel once had a Classics (all traditional folders) series that Camillus made back when they were still in the US.     The Mini Tuff Lite (serrated) is one I've liked as well.

I almost lost my pinky finger to an original partially serrated 4" Cold Steel Voyager.  That knife could CUT!

I liked the Voyager series a lot, and if I was to pick up another CS folder, that would probably be where I started.  If you want to add in fixed blades, well the SRK was nice, as was the Bushman.  I must have bought four or five of those knives and each time the first person to see them bought them from me.

I also have a real soft spot for the Master Tanto, and I love my classic brass one.  I would love to get the Magnum Tanto XII, but I really can't justify $500 for a knife I have no actual use for.

I have the Vietnam Hawk somewhere, does that count?

Oh, and the Spetznaz shovel, which I believe also counts as a hawk.... which I know sounds weird, but if you have ever handled a Spetznaz shovel then it's not as weird as it seems!

That's the Magnum Tanto XII I mentioned in my post further above.  I would love to have one, but like I said, $500 for a knife that I'll never use seems a bit excessive.  I have the 7" version, the Master Tanto and all I ever do with that is pull it out of the drawer, fondle it a bit then put it back.

I really have no use for tanto blades these days- when I was younger and trained in simultaneously dispatching multiple attackers then these kinds of blades were ideal.  Nowadays I am too fat to fit into the Kill Bill outfit and too lazy and insignificant to have mortal enemies, so I don't need these kinds of things.  I still love them, I just have more urgent things to spend $500 on.

I've never owned a Cold Steel folder as I don't need locking folders, but have had great results from their low end fixed blades. They just work! The Canadian Belt Knife didn't suit me ergonomically, so I gave that away. I still have the Finn Bear, Roach Belly and both standard and bowie Bushman. The Roach Belly is one of my all time favourite fixed blades. It won't be to everyone's taste, but I think it's an excellent pack knife if food prep is your priority, but you want other camp chore capability too.

Go on Poncho........be the first here to own a CS 1917 Bowie

Considering other threads around here advising members what to spend their money on, my first instinct is to recommend any one of the plastic-handled, bomb-proof lock and mostly good blade steel models.

When you think about that basic recipe, Spyderco immediately comes to mind, but I do think Cold Steel is ahead as far as providing quality at a reasonable price.

If it's to be folder and you're one and only CS.......go for any one of the XL folders.......can't go wrong for grin factor  >:D

Up there right next to Mora in the knife for the $ that you get
