The Prog Thread
on: January 03, 2017, 02:16:15 PM
Who likes prog? The most flamboyant, complex and lengthy of all the modern music genres. They say that punk did away with it in the late 70's but it's still going strong and sounding evolved, and whilst I have nothing against punk, I find prog a lot more challenging and gratifying to listen to.

It's a broad term, but here are some of my fave prog bands:

Opeth
Mars Volta
Mastodon
Tool
King Crimson
Genesis (early)
Marillion (or Genesis (early) as they are also known  :D )
Coheed and Cambria
The Decemberists
Porcupine Tree.

I'm always open to recommendations so tell me what you like/dislike.

I do like a bit of Prog.  8)  Early Rush and Jethro Tull (especially Tull) would be worthy additions to your list.  I'm going to have to check out a couple of yours, I'm not aware of them all.  :tu:

Rush! How could I forget Rush? That's what comes of multitasking!

Tull are one of those bands I keep over looking. What would you recommend as a starting point G?

Aqualung is probably their most iconic album, but I like pretty much anything they did before Ian Anderson left (mid 80s think?).  Broadsword and the Beast is the one that got me into them when I was a kid.

Broadsword is, it is probably fair to say, one of their eaiser listening albums.

I don't know most of these bands. I am familiar with Jethro Tull and early Marillion though, I like them. At the beginning of this century, or perhaps a few years earlier, a band in my home town tried to revive the rock opera idea. They are called Cirrha Niva and I think they have a number 1 guitar player. His name is Robbie Willemse (names like this seem quite common among famous people) and I've known him since his birth. Aged four he already was a guitar prodigy.

I have no idea what Prog is, but I have every Jethro Tull CD I could get my hands on, about 25.

If I had to choose just one band to listen to the rest of my life, it would be Jethro Tull.

Found myself in deep contemplation of the song One White Duck on a Wall recently......very profound  ;)

Prog is defined quite nicely as..... music approaching the condition of "art", and the studio, rather than the stage, being the focus of musical activity, often involving creating music for listening, not dancing to.
Prog is based on fusions of styles, approaches and genres, involving a continuous move between formalism and eclecticism.

My favourite bands are the ones who take you on a musical journey and from the start of the song/peice, you have no idea where you're going to end up.

I'm enjoying Porcupine Tree mate.  Good recommendation.   Having listened to some of the bands on your list I'm not sure that these chaps will suit you, but have you heard any Lord Huron?

Like Tull they're definitely from the folk end of prog, but it still counts IMO.

Great stuff! I love the video's, especially the second one. Nothing wrong with folk - The Decemberists are soaked in folk. I do prefer the Heavy Metal side of things, but am open to anything at all as long as it's interesting, and Lord Huron are definitely interesting. Cheers

Here's a beautiful folk tinged (Jethro Tull ish) song from Opeth - Mikael was definitely influenced by Ian Anderson:

It is usually categorized as progressive metal :)

Given that you have Opeth and Porcupine Tree listed (assume Stephen Wilson is on your radar), what about Anathema, Riverside and Nightingale (Dan Swano):

Riverside are exceptional.

Sadly they lost their main songwriter/guitarist last year. The good news is they are carrying on without him as a three piece.

Prog is what the cool kids (ie Me) call it.

I am so pleased you like Opeth G-Fiddy! What's your fave stuff?

Along with Tool and Mastodon, Opeth are my favourite band in the whole Universe.

I'm surprised the tread has gone this long without a mention of Dream Theater. Can't forget liquid tension experiment either.
