How to eliminate the the color in alox?
on: January 22, 2017, 07:22:34 PM
Hi guys

How would be possible to eliminate the color in an Alox SAK?

Example from orange to silver

With a Dremel?

Could be done by hand? I don´t have a Dremel.

Any cons? Less protection? Oxidation?

Thanks!!!  :tu:

9" angle grinder  >:D

The easiest way is to swap it with someone who wants an orange one for their silver one   :P

Well- ELectric OXidating aluminium creates a thin yet way more durable layer on the very weak aluminium (Aluminium oxides are among the most durable materials you can use for sanding materials).
If you remove this coating, the handles will wear off just a bit quicker. IMHO it'll be very hard to find a means of eroding the annoying orange (o tempora, o mores) without destroying at least a part of the texture. I've seen a couple of aloxes which had obviously been dremeld with a wire brush - which looked rather messy to me.

Good luck!

Why don't you just buy the normal uncolored version?

I would go for the trade solution. The silver should more common so you might be able to make a deal where the other part pays postage or similar but there's also the problem with raw aluminium that it oxidises unevenly and looks rather messy.

Bacause it is not a standard model in alox. So you will need a custom made. So easy!

I see, I would probably still go with drilling out the pins and modifying it. Yes, it's a bit of work and you'd have to have a donor (that could of course get the orange scales) but the raw aluminium will always look dirty. I've sanded off the anodising on a flat comb and even then the new oxidation looks dirty and uneven, I can only assume it would look even worse on a textured scale.
