111mm Super Club
on: January 27, 2017, 06:47:06 AM
Any fellow 111mm enthusiasts out there? I've carried 91mm for years, and I've switched to 111mm within the last year. I don't mind the bulk at all, and I feel like it's a little overlooked line. Currently I have a Dual Pro X and a Outrider (which is also a pretty decent post apocalyptic book series, only lasted 5 books, but I digress). I plan on focusing my collection efforts on this size for the near future.

So who else wants to join the club, we have fruit punch on Saturday's!

Excellent 111mm choices you have there...

Been meaning to get a Dual Pro X myself... and add a wood saw... then maybe I can try it out for EDC

Sadly where I live we only have the Dual Pro. Two serrated blades - one of the daftest ideas ever to come out of Ibach. I got one nonetheless, thinking it looked badass, but I never use it. I prefer the minimalist Hunter XS. The one without the saw.
An old pic from last year:

I went camping with the thing below - can't remember its name - the Forester. Absolutely perfect in every way - Grandma and my wife drink wine so even the corkscrew got regular use. The blade is non-scary (and legal where I live) and the saw is long enough not to be useless - our hats and coats were lying around in heaps on our tent floor so I made us a coat stand out of branches from the nearby forest! No Chippendale but it did the job.  Even the can opener was used when some hapless lady from the next tent asked if we could help with her impregnable tin of spaghetti ("You're an adult , why in God's name are you eating spaghetti from a tin?!" - what I wanted to say but didn't.)
Anyway, after ten days I came to realise that the Forester is as close as I'm going to get to the perfect 111mm SAK. At least for camping.
Again a random photo from last year which just happens to be on my computer, and which I haven't used already elsewhere on this site.

I've got more 111mms - including not one but two Hercules - way too big for me so I am wondering which one to sacrifice for parts. I gave my Trailmaster away after putting new orange scales on it - Vic should make them that way! I've also got an OH Forester but in general I don't like the serrated blade. I had two One Hand Master RTs which I sold - because I realised I'd never use them (too precious!) and I hate having things that sit around never getting used.

I've collected many of the 91mm models I wanted and always collecting more yet I haven't been as active with the 111mm SAKs...but things are picking up.

My first one was this camoflague Outrider model 55731 which has the backside phillips like the Malaysian Army version.

The blade had a big chip out of it so I hid it by grinding serrations into the bottom portion of the blade. Well thanks to this forum and You-know-who-you-are  () I have a replacement blade for it and am going to rebuild it back to its original pattern.

I also had an Atlas that I sold when I found a cheap Hercules. I plan on getting a work champ and then selling the Hercules, but I need to decide on which version of the metal file I want. I like the post-2005 on wood, but I like the pre-2005 one on fingernails  (when a true nailfile like Classic or Sportsman isn't around) and plastic items like guitar picks

I also want a liner-lock model that's basically a Camper. Corkscrew, openers, blade and woodsaw. Not sure which blade I'd want on there.

That would be the venerable Forester, no?
The non-OH, non-serrated blade is just beautiful on that thing... if you don't have one like it, I would definitely recommend the Forester.

I go back and forth between non-OH non-serrated for campsite food, or OH serrated for cutting rope, etc. Of course this means I must get both! Forrester first most likely.

Don't know if this is true or not, hopefully not though, the slide lock models will soon be stopped. This I remeber somebody commenting on this. Just can't remember where...

Which probably makes some sense. Just like pin diameter sizes, the openers on them slide locks are exactly the same as that of 91mm models. While the liner lock models enjoy the openers of the 93mm alox...

Do hope that more tools go on the liner locks... Say OHT X?

No, actually I can't stand mushrooms - my wife occasionally fries up some weird looking things she finds in the forest and it's like eating buttered slugs.
Last year - autumn - the whole place looked like an illustration from Alice in Wonderland. Cartoon toadstools all over the place. So yeah it's just eye candy!

111's are my favorite SAK'S. Here's some testing I started last year between serated vs non serrated 111mm. Once the weather warms up I'll be posting more test between the two.

That's sounds like what I've discovered. The serated sucks for most food prep.

I've EDC'ed an 111mm SAK since finding my first Rucksack in Bermuda in 91. As a lefty I really grew to like the slide lock models and never really jumped on the OHT bandwagon went it first came round. While I've owned many over the years I only currently have a few because I am more of a user than collector. I've recently discovered that the Rucksack is a discontinued model and that slide locks in general maybe going away. While this makes me sad, I have become a big fan of the Wenger push button lock on my current EDC a Ranger 56. In the past I've carried several Rucksacks, a Hunter, and now the Ranger.
So................can I be in your club?

Outrider is back together.  Nice weight to it.  I had forgotten.  I can see why they might want to phase  out the thinner pins at least. I had to re-do this one a second time today since the pins were bending.

So far I have three. Camo Hunter, DE GM Trekker and a Soldier. There's no way I could choose one over the other. It all depends on what I'm doing. If I need a plain edge but still want a serated blade I go with the Hunter. If I'm camping I want the Trekker. No OH hump to get in the way on the saw or can opener and the plain edge works better for wood work and food prep. For everyday urban use it's hard to beat the OHO serated blade of the Soldier.

P.S. Mad Max rocks

Ah, but it has a wood saw and those to die for scales and logo..........

I love the military Trekkers, but I find that I use my OH Nomad the most. It's lack of wood saw means it can be easily carried in a pocket and I swapped out the red/black scales for plain black, so I have the tooth pick/tweezers. Only wish it had the Phillips instead of the corkscrew......

And now, after looking more closely at the Polish Police knife, it seems to have an engraved,  blunt tipped blade with serrations at the back..

My 111 mm collection (before I sold the WorkChamp). My favorite, and heavily used, is the liner locked Fireman, with camo rescale.
