New SOG Camp Axe
on: February 02, 2017, 06:46:50 PM
I just browsed SOG website, and noticed this new axe:
https://www.sogknives.com/type/2017/camp-axe.html
Unlike a lot of modern axes coming out theese days it actually looks like a sensible tool. Nice round handle, a functional looking axe head with a good hammer.
The price isnt bad either.

Has anyone seen one in the flesh?

I would agree it looks very useful.  However, I just picked up the small hand hatchet with the knive in the handle by gerber for 15. That's pretty hard to beat and it actually takes a pretty good edge.

Still if the price is right this would be pretty tempting.

Contact Grant (DEF) (boss), he shared in another thread that he is a SOG dealer and was prepping an order, may improve the price.
It does appear to be a hardy tool, just not in the market for another at this time.

I have to say, I hadn't seen it in the catalogue until Gaute pointed it out, and now I figure I need one too.   :ahhh

I'm putting in an order in the next few days, and SOG confirms these are available now if anyone is interested.  :D

I opened mine up today and holy hell this bugger is sharp!

If you get one, be very careful taking it out of the clamp pack as it is liable to bite you, and it with bite HARD.

I haven't done anything with it but so far I really like it.  The nylon handle keeps it light but all the weight is focused on the head so it will likely chop really well.

And there isn't even the slightest hint of rattle, flex or looseness in it at all, which is the most important thing in a striking implement.

So far I really like it, but we'll see how well it holds up to playing this summer!

I actually did cut my self opening it... On the blister pack! Boy, that plastic was sharp. I didnt even notice until I saw all the blood.

I just had a minute to play with it, and I like what I see so far. Its nice and tight, the balance is good and I like the shape of the head.

I got mine out yesterday for a bit of testing, and, while the wood I was chopping was far from ideal, it did perform admirably.

That's how I carried it- I locked it onto my pack with a Maxpedition Grimlock and it worked beautifully, almost as if Maxpedition had the SOG Camp Axe in mind when they designed it... or was that the other way around?

In that one it is actually stuck in the log under the snow.  It was in there pretty solid.  The blade is razor sharp right out of the box and it cut through just about everything as good as any other axe I've ever owned... and better than many.

I took mine out for some yard work yesterday.
It cuts well, but I wish the handle was a bit thicker/ had a more "flat" shape.  In my experience, I really had to grip it hard to keep it from twisting when chopping.
Other than that I really like it.

These axes look great but I can see the twisting of it in hand could definitely be a problem :-\ Hopefully not a huge one and that all that have them are safe when using them :salute: Keep us updated on how things go with them Grathr and Grant (and anyone else that gets one :D ) :tu:

I didn't have that problem at all when I tried it.  But then I was wearing work gloves when I used it, and I didn't really chop much for any extended periods, so maybe that is the difference?

I did feel that the handle could use a little more aggressive texturing in it though.  It didn't slip during use, but I felt that it might, for whatever that is worth.

I did not wear gloves.
If I was to speculate, Id say it was designed to be used with gloves. The gloves would make the handle feel thicker in the hand, and the bumps in the handle less agressive on the palm.
Ill use gloves next time and report back.

I took it out for another spin, this time with gloves.
With gloves the twisting head issue disapears. :tu:
It is also a excellent axe to have dangeling from the hammer loop on your work pants. Its so light that its never obtrusive hanging like that. :tu:

I'm glad it worked better for you this time!

I really like this little axe a lot, although I have yet to use it for anything too serious.  This weekend that may change, as I am heading to my parent's place and will probably end up playing in the woods a fair bit.  Also, we need to take a tree down on my parent's property, so it may come in handy.

Maybe not as handy as my father's new Kubota tractor mind you, but handy enough!

Well, my father is now the proud new owner of my SOG Camp Axe!   :ahhh

He enjoyed it so much that I couldn't in good conscience take it away from him, plus he let me drive his tractor and lop some tree limbs off with an electric chainsaw on a stick, so I consider it an even trade.  After all, how often do you even see a chainsaw on a stick, let alone get to use it?

Having those would have really changed things on Walking Dead!  Unfortunately no pics of that in use though, as Megan seemed more concerned that I was perched precariously on the top rung of a 21 foot ladder to take any.  You'd think that would be a priority to cash in on a 2017 Fails compilation on YouTube.
