Long-term durability of the Leatherman Tread?
on: February 07, 2017, 11:33:16 PM
Hi there! I am considering getting myself a new (stainless steel) Leatherman Tread. I have several other Leatherman multitools, so I will not be buying this to get work done with it, but mostly to look cool on my wrist. Since this is a relatively new product, there’s very little information about the actual durability of the bracelet in the long term. Here are my questions to all owners of Leatherman Tread out there, preferably people that have own it for over a year or wear it every day:
- Is the clasp reliable? I have read several comments of people complaining about it.
- Are the screws of the individual links holding tight? Again, it seems a lot of people have problems with those.
- Anyone wearing one daily and working a desk job, involving a lot of typing on a keyboard? Does the Tread gets in the way?
- What about the weight/bulk? My wrist is 16.5 cm (6.5 inches), and I am okay with wearing a watch of around 100 grams.
What I am not concern about – the fact it’s expensive for what it is, the softer steel and the general lack of practicality. All I care is will this hold up to general wear and tear on the wrist the same way a quality watch would do and not break/fall apart.

I've only had mine since November's and don't wear mine everyday. I feel it's no heavier than a large steel banded watch. I use a keyboard at work a lot and it doesn't get in the way too bad. In the cold months like now I can wear it closer to my wrist but will add the 1/2 link back when it warms up. Doesn't clank too bad on the desk and what not. As far as the latch, I have read it gets loose over time and one gentleman I read had a screw back out of a link. It's not perfect but it comes with a 25 year warranty.  You miss a part like a screw and they will send you another, latch mess up they could replace it or fix it. I'm happy with it, I'll be going to Disney hopefully in a little bit and will use it on that trip due to regulations of the park. The tool gets scuffed kind of easy and won't be pretty for long, mainly where it rubs with table tops. I love the fact that the steel is very corrosion resistant, it's stainless 17-6 and has a higher nickel and vanadium content that standard Leatherman tools. Overall I'm very impressed for what it is. It's not a do it all and its not going to replace any of my plier based Leathermans.
