Affordable custom knives?
on: February 13, 2017, 03:44:56 AM
I'm interested in getting an affordable custom knife.  I have semi-customs like Chris Reeve but I'm looking into getting something that's hand forged and its a folder style. Looking for something around $100 but willing to go up to $150. Not picky about steel or anything, just want a good brand that has a good warranty. Lots of good prices for Damascus and what not but questionable sources from overseas.

You should look at the lesser known South African makers, you have the exchange rate working very much in your favour.

Shouldn't "custom" involve client's input on the design, material selection...? Those Michael Morris knives are made from files with added cutting edges. They are semi-hand made / production-ish at most.

I don't know how successful you are going to be in finding a custom folding knife for $100-$150. That was the going price for one when I started really getting into knife collecting back in the 1970's.Anyone making custom knives today with any kind of a recognizable name is probably going to have a base folder starting around $400 to $500 and probably double that for a Damascus blade. My suggestion would be to attend a knife show near you and see what the makers are offering and what their prices are. Talk with a few as to what you are looking for(without mentioning a price)and let them give you the information as well as their pricing. To get a good overall idea talk with people who are veteran makers as well as newcomers.Ask to feel how their knives function to get an idea of what type of pattern suits you most.
If there are no knife shows nearby see if you can locate a maker in your area and make an appointment to see his knives. Just some ideas.

There are a few videos around showing how Michael makes his knives (I will have a look tonight)  They are all hand made  :tu:
He will work with people for a more custom knife but I expect that will put the price up, send him an email he will respond  :salute:

At that price point I'd say you could get a much better production folder. For a custom, it would seem to be an extremely entry level, overly simplistic design. I guess I don't completely understand the angle of wanting a ~100 custom.

Interested to see what you come up with though, if any.  :tu:

I understand custom to mean a product produced to specific customer specifications,a unique knife, but since you seem happy enough with a standard production knife with a bit of manual work, try this too : http://manly-bg.com/catalog/887_category.html   They used to be alot cheaper..
Also consider GEC and SVORD etc.

You may find something you could design at RapidRiverKnifeworks.com
I receive a small lock blade pocket knife for Christmas and it is well made.  In checking out the company found they do custom and limited edition knifes at a price I thought was reasonable.
Made in upper peninsula of Michigan.

So if you didn't know I am a fan of Michael Morris and his work  :hatsoff:

Here he is making a knife, this was 6 years ago so he might have been replaced by a machine by now

Lovely work by MM.  Reminds me of Anza knives especially when he was talking about why he uses files.  I have an Anza and its not bad.  This guys FnF appears to be a bit nicer.  I think Anza earlier knives were a lot nicer from what I read.

I just checked, US$100 today is a N$1320 of my monopoly money.

That's almost exactly the complete and utter buddy-price I'm asking for the last two small Puukku'ish knives I made.....for buddies.  :drink:

I withdraw my earlier suggestion after seeing the prices on this site: https://africancustomknives.com/

At $100 you're probably just covering the cost, the maker doesn't get a cent for his time.

I'm going to order one from Michael Morris when I get a chance.  A friction folder is what I'm looking, I understand svord brand would be cheaper but I like having input in blade style and handle materials.

After a lot of searching on Etsy I settled on this one from Ugly Dog Blades. He used 154CM and a variety of materials for handles. I almost got one from a guy here in Georgia where I am at but thought this one was a looker.  You can get a friction folder, handmade for $110 to $180 depending on materials and maker. Let me know what you think.  I'll get it Tuesday, I'm itching to check it out.

There are quite a few manufacturers that are both established and new that have very affordable prices on knives. You just need to dig hard to find them.
