Tinting the titanium scales?
on: October 09, 2010, 03:29:15 AM
If I'm remembering correctly I saw a picture posted here where a member heated the scales on his TTi to tint them different colors. Is there a certain procedure for that? I might be interested in doing it if it's fairly easy.

All you need is a propane torch and you're good to go. You might want to practice on some ti scrap first. You can pickup a torch in the plumbing dept of any Home Depot.  :salute:
Sometimes change is a good thing, other times not so much!

Ok so it's just that easy!  Thanks for the info. Do you know of any place I can get hold of some ti scrap?

Also would I need to take the scales off? Or will just a quick exposure to the heat do the trick?

Thank you Allan for the reference link  :D

@UAinfidel,
I call it as a flamed TTi,
Actually, i want to share the processing as my promise to Allan on the Charge-a-holic thread.
But my English is very bad, i got a difficult to write the processing .. ???
And also i have to burn my other TTi... :twak:

As i ever read on the flashlight forum, we can coloring the titanium by anodized processing.
With this method, we can choose the color required. You can search it on the CPF,
and IMHO, the method is not too difficult.

Also i ever read on the article.. (sorry, i forget about the link),
we can coloring the titanium by heat processing.
I use this method as it more easy and simple for me.
We should disassemble the TTi and take the scales off, and make sure to clean the titanium scale surface, you can wash it with detergent.
And the next step is just burn the TTi scale at the gas stove, at least about 5 minutes and the 4 pieces scale has change their colors.
You can try 1 pcs of the scale first, and burn it for about 1 minute, and after the titanium in red color, flush it with water, and you can see the color appear, or you can try it in 30 seconds first to see the colors.
But with this method, we can not control the colors, so you can see at my TTi, there are many colors appear.
It's different with anodizing process, we can choose what color we want.
Here i still have the photo while the TTi scale has finish in heat processing.

The result

I do not know the effect with this method, but in my experience, it's become hard to scratch.

Once again, sorry with my English above, but i hope it can help you to coloring your TTi scales :D

Isn't there a way of doing this by putting it in the oven too?

Sure I've read that somewhere

I have carried my Charge TTi a few days now and realize it needs, demands some customization.  I came across this thread and am thinking about giving it a go.  I will do some mod to my charge first and while I have it apart may give it a go.

Anyone else flame/heat color their TTi?

G'Day Mate,

I have done it twice now. The first one I did NOT take the tool apart as I did not have the bits at that stage. It worked OK, but the mistake I made was not to clean all the oils / lube off it first. Some of it coloured the insides of the tool slightly. The scales turned out exactly as I wanted them. The pics are of the first one I did.

The second time was for a mate. He took the tool apart and we just worked with the scales. What he wanted was to have both scales on each side to look similar. We hung them off some wire and heated just the bits we wanted on both scales at the same time for a similar time frame. They came out very nice. Unfortunately no pics of it.

I use a butane kitchen burner and get the Ti red hot and let them cool off naturally.

Now for the pics

Pete

WOW that looks awesome.  The Ti is nice but what a difference the color makes.

So heat till red hot then let cool.  I still want to figure out what internal tool set I want.  I'm glad I took this tool out of its sad dark existence.

Thanks, the rainbow colours makes a huge difference.

I think the redder it get the more blue gets generated when cold. The yellow is the "coolest" or shortest heating. I started with a corner and worked from there. A test bit will give you an idea which colours gets generated first.
